Guy the Geezer v Mad Madge: Ritchie and Madonna still trading punches... so who's ahead on points?
Last updated at 1:49 AM on 24th July 2010
When wed, they were notorious for their rows. And, it seems, the rivalry between Guy Ritchie and Madonna continues to burn almost two years after ending their marriage. This week, Madonna started directing a new film, W.E., in London — taking on her film director ex-husband at his own game. People who know her say the two of them remain locked in a competitive struggle. So, who is winning the battle? ALISON BOSHOFF takes a ringside seat...
IN THE BLUE CORNER
NAME: Guy Stuart Ritchie of Hatfield, Hertfordshire
THE WEIGH IN: Raised in a world of privilege — hunting, shooting and fishing. A fan of martial arts, he is a judo black belt and brown belt in Brazilian ju-jitsu.
He has a scar on his cheek from a street fight which Madonna used to find very sexy.
IN THE RED CORNER
NAME: Madonna Louise Ciccone of Bay city, Michigan
THE WEIGH IN: Dedicated to fitness, and has a reputation for fighting dirty. Fond of a few verbals before the ringside bell tolls.
Sample: ‘I’m going to kick your ass, but it’s going to make you feel good’ — how she described 2008 album Hard candy.
ROUND 1: LOVERS
Madonna is still (just about) with 23-year-old Brazilian Jesus Luz. They started dating after meeting at a photo shoot towards the end of 2008.
They reportedly split in February this year, but have been spotted kissing since.
Everyone says that it’s a rocky relationship, with both Madonna and Jesus spending time travelling separately for work.
This week, Luz was to be found ‘hanging out’ on the beach in Rio de Janeiro, while Madonna travelled to London.
Madonna’s daughter Lourdes, 13, was a big fan of Luz, initially — it was said that he and Lourdes had a happier friendship than he had with Madonna. But she is now said to find him ‘obnoxious and self-absorbed’.
Madonna has been looking into buying him his own place in new York — which seems to be an exit strategy for when their relationship ends.
Guy is happy in a new romance with model Jacqui ainsley, who is 28 to his 41.
The pair (pictured) started dating in april and they are said to be going from strength to strength. They made their first public appearance together this month and there are rumours of a summer engagement. Guy finds the Essex-born blonde down-to-earth, and was pictured in his jim-jams waving her off after a night together.
Madonna is said to be fascinated by the relationship. according to an associate of the singer: ‘There is no way Madonna will let Jesus go while Guy is close to Jacqui. She doesn’t want to be single, especially when Guy is so happy.’
Wham! Guy takes this round easily.
ROUND 2: HOMES
Madonna's main residence remains the New York apartment she bought during her marriage to Sean Penn — which she has knocked through into the two neighbouring apartments.
She was disappointed to lose Ashcombe House in Wiltshire to Guy, but did manage to keep the Marylebone house which was their London marital home, and the house in Beverly Hills which she bought during the marriage.
As well as Ashcombe House, Guy has two homes in Fitzrovia, London, which he is in the process of knocking together.
For the time being, he is renting a property in a nearby mews.
He also kept his London pub — popular with the A-list — The Punchbowl.
A closely fought round, but Guy comes out on top.
ROUND 3: FAMILY
Madonna has primary custody of the children: Lourdes, 13, whose father is fitness trainer Carlos Leon; Guy’s biological son Rocco, nine; and david Banda, four, adopted by Madonna and Guy from Malawi in 2008.
There is also five-year-old Mercy James, adopted by Madonna alone from Malawi last year.
Recently, there seem to have been some tensions surrounding Rocco’s tenth birthday in early august.
Guy had made plans to take Rocco on a father and son fishing trip, but Madonna wants them to have a combined celebration.
Meanwhile , Lourdes is fast becoming a media star — with her first magazine cover and her own fashion line which came out this summer.
Madonna is proud, but might she feel overshadowed by her the attention her beautiful daughter gets at times?
Guy was disappointed that Madonna chose to relocate to new York, and take the children out of the school that they were attending in London.
But he saw them all for extended periods last summer when she was touring, and also managed to spend Christmas with them at ashcombe house last year.
Rumour has it Madonna calls Guy more now than during their marriage. and it was during one of these calls that she apparently told him she misses their family life in London.
Guy was astonished — in the latter years of the marriage they had to diarise every minute of family time, which seemed to come a poor second to her devotion to hours of daily exercise and business meetings.
A dead heat.
ROUND 4: CELEB FRIENDS
Madonna has fallen out of touch with her London posse, most notably Gwyneth Paltrow and trainer Tracey Anderson — two women whom she used to see daily.
She also seems to have lost her close links to pal Stella Mccartney and her group of female friends , including actresses Kate Hudson and Liv Tyler.
She didn’t go to Stella’s New York catwalk show this year — but everyone else in the gang attended.
Madonna is also no longer friends with Sting’s wife, Trudie Styler, who first introduced Madonna to Guy.
Last week, Gwyneth Paltrow and chris Martin had Guy and Jacqui over for dinner — news which will have hurt Madonna, as Gwyneth was her closest pal in London.
The explanation, apparently, was that chris ‘really likes Guy’ — the subtext being that he never liked Madonna.
Guy remains close to Jude Law and has forged a close friendship with artist Sam Taylor-Wood. He remains friends with Trudie Styler.
A few low blows here — but another win for Guy.
ROUND 5: MONEY
Madonna’s recent sticky and sweet tour was one of her most successful yet — raking in £4 million a night (around £91 million in total).
She also continues to earn large publishing revenues (as she writes her own music), boosted by the episode of TV’s Glee which featured cast members singing her song.
Her total fortune — founded on the sale of more than 200 million albums worldwide and numerous tours — is said to be around £240 million.
Guy Ritchie, obviously, is in a rather different league as a moderately successful film director.
He’s said to be worth around £40 million, most of it from the divorce, which saw him get £12 million in cash and £20 million in property (it was originally reported that he did not want a penny).
His film earnings seem limited by comparison. The latest accounts for his company, Ska Films, show a profit of £203,000 and total assets of £979,000.
He seems to channel earnings via offshoot companies such as ska swept away (which is not trading) and ska Diamonds (income from the film snatch) which made a £1,463,000 pre-tax profit last year.
He will have received his best pay packet to date for directing Sherlock Holmes in 2009 — the film had a £40million budget.
His cut was said to be £500,000, plus a slice of the profits and more will come from DVD sales.
Even when they were married, Madonna always made him pay half of the children’s school fees and other expenses — it was that kind of relationship.
Madonna, by a mile.
ROUND 6: FILM CAREER
Noted as a terrible actress, with such box office turkeys as Shanghai Surprise, embarrassing erotic thriller Body of evidence and the exceptionally poor Swept Away.
Undeterred, she now hopes to make it as a director, too. W.e. — about the romance between Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII — has been a troubled project so far, with several high-profile names, once suggested, such as Ewan McGregor and Vera Farmiga, not taking part.
And Margo Stilley was to play one of the leads but bailed out earlier this year, saying: ‘I had the role, but we had artistic differences. Madonna is really something.
'I wish the cast luck, because they are all really talented.’
The cast now includes Abbie Cornish, Andrea Riseborough, James d’Arcy, James Fox and Laurence Fox.
The film is set both in England in 1936 and in New York in 1998.
Such is Madonna’s devotion that she has spent two and a half years on the script, saying she doesn’t have the time to pursue her music career as she is concentrating on movies.
Her first effort as a director was a low-budget film called Filth And Wisdom, which premiered last year at the Berlin Festival.
It took a grand total of £14,000 in the U.S.
According to one critic, it was ‘a movie so incredibly bad that Berlin festival-goers were staggering around in a state of clinical shock.’
Madonna has a lot to prove. And let’s not forget that she seemed to act as a hex on Guy’s career: while he was with Madonna, he racked up a string of disappointments including Rockn-Rolla, Swept Away and Revolver.
Guy is on a professional high. His last film, Sherlock Holmes, was his most successful, and took a staggering £338 million at the box office.
He is putting the finishing touches to the script for a sequel and is in talks with daniel day Lewis, who may play Moriarty. Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr will be reprising their roles as Holmes and Watson.
Filming starts this october and the movie is destined — just like Madonna’s — for release in 2011.
An easy round: Guy all the way.
AND THE WINNER IS...
A reversal of fortune — as after years of being the butt of everyone’s jokes, Guy Ritchie has gone the distance and emerges the clear winner. Madonna is left on the ropes. For now.
