About iri5:
Making What is Old, New Again
Erika Iris Simmons was born in 1983 in St. Louis, USA. Since her emergence Erika has blended the concerns and methods of conceptual art with craft-making and popular culture to create her own whimsical installations. She explores the nostalgia of the archaic, using donated second-hand items as her prime media. For her, there is always a hidden world to be found in the seemingly mundane. Simmons’ works eschew typical standards of new and old. She welcomes anyone to participate in the evolution by donating items and witnessing the transformation.  New York Times journalist Rob Walker has described her works as “astonishing.”
Since her first showing in 2008, Simmons’ work has been exhibited internationally in group exhibitions and through private ventures. Recent shows include the “The Medium is the Message” at the Peninsula School of Art (2010) and “Music to Your Eyes,” at the Arizona Museum for Youth in Mesa, AZ (2010). Her art also recently inspired the Bruno Mars music video “Just the Way You Are.”  Simmons lives and works in Atlanta. She received her B.A. (Russian Language and Literature) from Washington University in St. Louis in 2006.
