Madonna thinks her 13-year-old daughter is "much more fashion forward" than she is.
The 51-year-old pop star is renowned for her edgy sense of style, but she insists her daughter Lourdes - nicknamed Lola - is far more fashionable. The star says she's constantly torn between wanting to tell the teenager to dress more "appropriately" and being in awe of her "amazing" style.
"I always have two reactions when Lola comes into my room with an outfit on," Madonna explained. "One is, 'Oh my God, she looks amazing, what incredible style,' then my second reaction is, 'She's dressed completely inappropriately for school.'"
"She's much more fashion forward and savvy then I am at this point. I usually ask her to take off the three inch or six inch platforms and to pull her skirt down just a little bit and to take off some of the black eye make-up from around her eyes.
"Because she does have amazing style but I am the typical mother where I say, 'You can't go to school dressed like that.'"
Madonna can't believe how creative Lourdes is when it comes to fashion. Her everyday outfits are governed by her school's dress code, but the singer says this just makes the teen even more "resourceful". She takes inspiration from films, music videos and catwalk shows to create incredible looks that constantly impress her mother.
"So I have to think with two brains. Because she has kind of a uniform at her school, there's a restriction of what world of colour she can work with," Madonna told People magazine.
"There's a restriction so it makes her have to be more creative and more resourceful. All those elements put together as well as her influences, watching films, watching music videos, she pays attention to what's going on in the industry and what people are wearing."
Madonna and Lourdes are preparing to launch their new junior clothing line Material Girl, which will go on sale in US department store Macy's from August 3.
