A man suspected of stalking Madonna tried to commit suicide by starting a fire in his cell.
Grzegorz Matlok, 29, was about to be engulfed when two prison officers dragged him to safety.
One was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation following the drama at Wandsworth prison, South London.
Matlok is accused of breaking into the singer's £10million mansion in Marylebone, West London, in March. He allegedly rifled through her bedding after using a rope to scale the balcony.
Madonna, 52, was in the US at the time.
Matlok was unhurt during the 3am suicide bid.
Jail bosses are probing how he got flammable materials into his cell.
Matlok is due to appear at Southwark Crown Court on June 29 when a judge will decide if he is fit to plead.
