This could be the way pop promotion is going – new artists launched not with a full concert, but with the live equivalent of a video clip.
The scene at the Camden Palace in the early hours was like something from a British version of Flashdance. The place was packed with the usual exotically dressed clientele – there to see and be seen rather than just listen to the music – when the dancing was interrupted by what's known on the American disco scene as a "track date."
Pioneered by the likes of Grace Jones, this is a cut-price promotion device in which a disco artist suddenly appears for half an hour, singing live to backing tapes.
This demonstration was by a white girl in her early twenties, known simply as Madonna, a dancer who moved to New York from the Mid-West as an ambitious teenager and is currently the most important new figure in the American dance scene.
She succeeded partly because she makes great records and partly because she has turned the boring idea of a track date into an exotic event.
Dressed in holocaust chic – black top, black skirt and leggings, lots of bare midriff, and hair in ringlets – she sang well, with a husky, black-sounding voice, and danced even better. She hurtled around the stage, mostly swivelling her hips like a belly-dancer while performing her songs like Lucky Star and the stirring Holiday.
Given a full set and a live band behind her, Madonna would seem to have the makings of a major star, so it's no wonder she is now being managed by the man who guided Michael Jackson's recent career.

Sandra Bernhard met en boîte Madonna et Sarah Palin.

Bernhard riffs on 'scary times'
By Chris Jones | Tribune critic
October 28, 2008

At the top of Sandra Bernhard's Steppenwolf show Monday night, we heard rapturous pre-recorded applause and a delighted woman's voice. "Thank you," it said. "Thank you very much."
Ah, we thought. Bernhard is recycling some glorious live moment from the past. She is having a little fun with her own craving for celebrity. But then the voice started to talk about a nomination and being honored to accept and …
This wasn't Bernhard. This was Sarah Palin! Happy Halloween!
Funny how alike the two of them sound.
Bernhard then walked out onstage in top hat, shorts, tails, pearls and fishnet stockings, sporting a riding crop—but also made up for beauty, looking more glamorous than we have ever seen her.
Funny how alike the two of them look too.
In case you've failed to notice, urban liberals are in a state of abject terror one week out from the election. It's as if they're up at blackjack but convinced the run is going to come to a sudden, terrible end. Bernhard has always been chipperish onstage—even when in the throes of the Letterman thing or the failed TV show thing—but her constant refrain Monday night was "scary times, scary times."
"I just wanna blow up all the television sets," she said.
Palin has turned into the ubertext of every female comedian in America. For Bernhard, hell isn't hard to define. It's a White House where "Trump and Tiddlywinks" are running around with their mother, and Levi stops by the refrigerator for a can of Red Bull. Any time he wants.
Bernhard is, of course, a mother now, and her tours are more isolated gigs than long road sojourns where she gets into a manic groove. And this brilliant stream-of-what's-on-her-mind performer is now talking about hamsters and cupcakes. If you remember, say, her "I'm Still Here ... Dammit" tour, all that gives you pause. But life marches scarily on. Her audience has aged. And time has increased her vulnerability and honesty.
At one hysterical, full-circle moment Monday night, Bernhard recounted hearing Madonna instructing her kid, "You have to learn to share."
"Pot," Bernhard said, wickedly, like the old times, "meet kettle."

JUST SHUT UP
October 13, 2008

FRESH off making sick jokes about Sarah Palin being "gang-raped" by blacks, Sandra Bernhard threw more verbal grenades the other night with cracks about her former BFF, Madonna. The balloon-lipped comic, who was cut from a Boston women's shelter gala after the Palin flap, told 300 gay men at a private Chelsea benefit she couldn't believe how terrible Madge looked. "I saw her at the gym, and I thought it was Dyan Cannon - all straggly and [bleep]," quipped Bernhard, referring to the 71-year-old movie actress. An insider said, "Sandra was hysterical."

Sandra Bernhard s'en prend à Madonna à Toronto.

MADONNA'S EX-PAL LETS LOOSE
July 1, 2008 --

GUY Ritchie
might want to look up his wife's former close friend, Sandra Bernhard, for a shoulder to cry on.
While Ritchie was jetting here from London - perhaps to try to save his foundering marriage to the Material Mom - Bernhard just ripped her in Toronto, going off on a rant when one fan shouted, "Are you still friends with Madonna?"
"She . . . descended into this mad, dark, five-minute freestyle, where she mercilessly mocked the Queen of Pop by repeatedly chanting, 'We Only Got Four Minutes to Save the World,' [and] at one point screamed, 'My chicken is raw!' " reports Toronto columnist Shinan Govani. "After all that, she paused pregnantly and asked, deadpan: 'Does that answer your question?' "
Bernhard also mentioned Madonna "when Sandra began to crap on all the celebrities who like to brag that they 'work out three hours a day,' " Govani writes. "Like Madonna, she said. Like Gwyneth Paltrow. 'Yeah, why don't you rub some salt in the wounds of the people who have to work 14 hours a day?' Bernhard thundered."
Meanwhile, Madonna's been rehearsing daily for her upcoming "Sticky and Sweet" tour at Steiner Studios in Williamsburg, and her drivers are racing like madmen to get her there and back. "They are constantly using lights and sirens, running reds, it's very dangerous," said one eyewitness. In 2006, Page Six reported Madonna's drivers zipped through 40 red lights in four days.
And Saturday, while Madonna sat in Kabbalah class on East 48th Street, her longtime driver, Abel, blocked a parking garage for 30 minutes. "The garage attendant was trying to get him to move," said our spy. "He was totally blocking the sidewalk, people had to walk in the street. She just doesn't care."
"I can't imagine they would go through red lights unless there was a dire security emergency," said Madonna's rep, Liz Rosenberg. "But I'm sure she is transported with utmost respect for other people."

Paris place to be
By Brendan Leonard

After her recent return from a trip to Paris she won in a sweepstakes, Carol Silvernail of Baraboo says the trip was a blessing.
"No wonder they always talk about Paris in the spring," she said. "All the trees were blooming and it was just beautiful."
Silvernail, who loves to enter sweepstakes and contests, won a trip to see Madonna in concert through SIRIUS Satellite Radio's Flyaway to Paris with Madonna giveaway. She said it was exciting to see the pop icon in an intimate venue.
"The concert was in a theater probably a third the size of the Al. Ringling Theatre," Silvernail said.
"(Madonna) said she selected that theater because of all of the famous people who sang there in the past."
Silvernail went on the trip with her sister, Pam Marquie, who lives in Apex, N.C. Silvernail's husband, Dan, was unable to get time off from work for the trip.
Marquie said before they left on the trip that her sister has always loved to enter contests and sweepstakes.
"Even as a little kid, she was hooked on contests and that type of thing," Marquie said. "I think once you win, you're hooked. And she's unusually lucky."
Silvernail said temperatures were in the mid-70s for each day of their trip.
She and her sister took advantage of their time to visit art museums including the Louvre, she said. They also attended a Mass at Notre Dame.
"Our hotel was right off the Champs-Elysees; it's like the Rodeo Drive of Paris," Silvernail said. "We saw Monet, Manet, Renaud, Renoir, Degas — to actually see the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo ... it really was the trip of a lifetime.
"It wasn't something I would have selected for myself, but I'm really glad I was able to go."
But since she's returned, it's been back to business as usual for the real estate appraiser. Work — and a few sweepstakes.
"I have entered a couple, I sure did," she said.

Madonna Rocks Pantera in Concert
05/13/2008

(Blabbermouth) Pop superstar Madonna paid tribute to "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott by playing what sounds a lot like the main riff to Pantera's classic song "A New Level" during her May 10, 2008 performance at Radio One's Big Weekend at Mote Park in Maidstone, UK.
Blabbermouth has the footage and says the "A New Level" riff can be heard six minutes and 20 seconds into the video.
Madonna's current touring guitarist and guitar teacher is none other than Monte Pittman, who has also recorded and toured with Prong.

MADONNA Rocks PANTERA During UK Concert - May 13, 2008
Last Updated: May 13, 2008 2:32 PM

Pop superstar MADONNA paid tribute to "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott by playing what sounds a lot like the main riff to PANTERA's classic song "A New Level" during her May 10, 2008 performance at Radio One's Big Weekend at Mote Park in Maidstone, UK.

Watch the footage below. (The "A New Level" riff can be heard six minutes and 20 seconds into the video.)

MADONNA's current touring guitarist and guitar teacher is none other than Monte Pittman, who has also recorded and toured with PRONG.
According to Bug magazine, Pittman landed the job as MADONNA's touring guitarist after a man called the music store in Los Angeles where Pittman was working inquiring about guitar lessons, and Monte's name was passed along. That customer was none other than Guy Ritchie, film director extraordinaire and soon-to-be husband of Madonna. "Guy was my third student," Monte told Bug. "That was before 'Snatch' came out, and I didn't know who he was. It turns out he and Madonna were dating. He had just had some surgery done on his knee, I believe, so he was off his feet and she got him a guitar. He started taking lessons, and he got pretty good at it. I remember the day 'Music' [Madonna's CD] came out, and I taught him a few things from it. I thought it would be cool for him to play them for her."
When Guy returned the favor and bought Madonna a guitar, she started taking lessons from Monte as well. "It was the same thing as Guy — she learned everything I gave her," Monte told Bug. "She took it seriously, and worked really hard at it. She learned so much so quickly. That's one thing about Madonna — her drive is incredible."
A month after Madonna started playing guitar, she got called to perform on "The Late Show with David Letterman". "She invited me to come play with her, and I thought she was pulling my leg at first," Monte told Bug, "but she was serious."
"A New Level" originally appeared on the PANTERA album "Vulgar Display of Power", which came out in February 1992.

Madonna lets rip live on the BBC
Ben Dowell
guardian.co.uk, Monday May 12 2008

An expletive-laden performance by Madonna on live television and radio on Saturday has attracted just four complaints to the BBC from the public.
The popstar said "fuck" twice during her set at the Radio 1 Big Weekend gig on Saturday, which was broadcast live on BBC3, BBC HD and Radio 1.
During the performance at about 9.35pm on Saturday, she introduced her song Hung Up by holding up a cane and saying, according to a Sun report today: "You guys are going to have to start fucking it up out there 'cos I need to feel some love. I'm going to do an old song. But not too old. Fuck the present. Let's live in the past."
After her performance, the presenter Zane Low apologised: "An incredible performance … that said, a quick apology for those people who might have found the content offensive."
A BBC spokeswoman today declined to issue a further apology for Madonna's language on Saturday.
"There was a very strong warning given at the beginning of the show. It was post watershed and at the end of the show Zane Lowe apologised if any offence had been caused," she added.
The sight of Madonna swearing live on BBC TV was potentially embarrassing for the corporation after the heavy criticism heaped on it by Ofcom following the use of expletives by the singer, along with other artists, during the broadcast of the Live 8 concert in 2005 and the Live Earth concert in 2007.
BBC1's coverage of the Live 8 concert was found to have contravened the broadcasting code when Snoop Dogg, Madonna and Green Day contributed to repeated swearing screened long before the watershed.
The corporation failed to apologise for the bad language and failed to keep a senior editorial figure in charge of monitoring Live 8's output, even though it was aware some acts might pose a problem, the media regulator found.
Last month Ofcom imposed one of its toughest sanctions to date on the BBC, requiring it to admit to viewers it breached broadcast regulations after BBC1 and BBC2 aired repeated swearing during its coverage of the Live Earth concerts last summer.
The media regulator said the corporation was guilty of a "serious and repeated" failure to comply with broadcast regulations after the word "fuck" was used on six different occasions by singers including Madonna and Phil Collins at last summer's event.
A summary of the regulator's findings was broadcast on BBC1 at 7pm on April 12, and at 4pm on the same day on BBC2.

By WENN
world entertainment news

Pop superstar Madonna shocked the crowd at an English music festival on Saturday by swearing live on stage.
The singer was performing at Radio 1's One Big Weekend event in Mote Park, Maidstone when she uttered the profanities during her six-song set, which was broadcast simultaneously on radio and television.
She told the crowd, "You guys are going to have to start f**king it up out there 'cos I need to feel some love. I'm going to do an old song. But not too old. F**k the present. Let's live in the past."
Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe was then forced to issue an apology to listeners and viewers.
But it wasn't the only controversy caused by Madonna - British newspaper the Mirror reports the star's 70-strong entourage ate food meant for other performers on the bill.
The publication also claims Madonna arrived late for rehearsals, and demanded to be flown to the venue, which was only 37 miles (59.5 kilometres) from her London home, by private helicopter.
Jon Fratelli, of Scottish band The Fratellis says, "Who does Madonna think she is? I'm not into all this - we're here to perform together. What happened to rock n' roll? Why is she even here?
"Everything has been changed around just for her and her ridiculous entourage."

Madonna fait des ravages au festival gratuit.

Madonna

Madonna opened her six song performance dressed all in black and sat on a gold throne.
The show featured an amazing light show and images projected onto the stage. Madonna even dueted with a virtual Justin Timberlake on 4 Minutes.
The Queen of Pop showed she she's still got what it takes as she performed on stage with her backing dancers.
Madonna played songs from her new album Hard Candy, and rounded things off with fans' favourite Music.
The singer is 50-years-old this year but shows no signs of slowing down - she begins a world tour in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium this August.
The guitar made an appearance as Madonna reworked her song Hung Up.
As soon as the show was over, in true megastar style, she left the site by private helicopter.

Last Updated: Saturday, 10 May 2008, 21:31 GMT 22:31 UK

Madonna has played her first UK show of the year, closing the opening night of Radio 1's Big Weekend.
Dressed all in black, the Queen of Pop performed a 40 minute set at Mote Park in Maidstone, pleasing fans with number one single 4 Minutes.
She also played a number of songs from her recent studio album Hard Candy, including Candy Shop and Miles Away.
The show came as part of a trio of live performances to launch the album, the other two being in New York and Paris.
Later in the set, Madonna reworked Hung Up for electric guitar, ending the song with a wall of noise. The show ended with another single, Music.
However, the singer didn't play any of her well known hits from the 80s and 90s.
Speaking to Radio 1 DJ Jo Whiley before her performance, Madonna explained why she wanted to play the songs she picked.
She said: “Obviously, I want to do new stuff because I’m very excited about it.
"I feel that’s what people come to hear but I also want to do a few of my oldies but goodies.
"I chose Hung Up because that was the biggest hit from my last record and I chose Music because it’s a crowd pleaser, it’s anthemic and it brings people together.”
The tent was full to capacity for the show. Extra monitors played the set to fans outside.
As Madonna disappeared behind a stage prop made to look like a tube train at the end of the show, most fans left happy.
31 year old Gerard Sutton told Newsbeat: "It was great for Maidstone, she looked like she loved being here and everyone loved it."
19 year old Georgina Finch from Hastings added: "She was good but she should have sung some older stuff and should have been on for longer. She was awesome though."
Radio 1's Big Weekend is the biggest free ticketed music festival in Europe and has previously been held in Dundee and Preston.
30,000 people are expected over the two days, and more than half a million people applied for tickets.

Madonna au Radio 1 Big Weekend.

Saturday May 10, 2008 07:56 AM

Thousands of music fans are to flock to see Madonna and a host of other stars perform at Radio 1's Big Weekend.
Around 30,000 revellers are due to attend the free event in Maidstone, Kent, where they can expect to see a range of pop, indie and dance acts including Usher, Duffy, Fatboy Slim and Adele across four main stages.
This year for the first time, Radio 1 has added the BBC Introducing Stage to the bill, where new and upcoming bands can be showcased.
Demand for tickets this year was the greatest in the history of the event, which has been taking place in its present format at venues across the country for the past three years.
More than 500,000 people applied for the 30,000 tickets on offer, with tickets being allocated through a lottery system, although a large proportion were given to residents of Maidstone and the wider area.
Those who were not lucky enough to get a ticket will not miss out completely as they will be able to catch live coverage of the event on TV and radio throughout the weekend.
Preparations for the event have been going on for months.
Extra train services have been laid on by Southeastern trains between Maidstone and London, while a park and ride service has been put in place in the town.
Kent Police have warned that anyone involved in anti-social behaviour or without a ticket will be made to leave the area under a dispersal order they have obtained specially for the event.

PARIS (AFP) - Pop diva Madonna turned sexy hard-rock queen for a night at a private concert in Paris Tuesday night, telling her fans she loves to french-kiss the French as she ground away at an electric guitar.
Wearing black from head to toe, her blonde curls loose to her shoulders, Madonna put on a high-voltage half-hour show for a privileged 1,500 fans to mark the release of "Hard Candy", her 10th chart-topping album.
"Who do you love more, me or the Rolling Stones?" she asked the crowd packing the Olympia, a mythical concert hall near the Paris opera, before launching into a ear-popping heavy-metal version of her mega-hit, "Hung Up".
"I thought you might say that," quipped the queen of pop, who turns 50 on August 16, as the adoring crowd roared back their answer.
The Material Girl made her stage entrance seated in a black-and-gold fairytale throne, wearing a black satin bodice, satin pants and tailcoat with pink lining, lace-up boots with six-inch heels, and twirling a magician's wand.
Madonna told the concert hall it was "a historical moment" for her to be performing on the same stage as the iconic French chanteuse Edith Piaf, or fellow legends Juliette Greco and Marlene Dietrich.
"Why do I have this relationship with France? I'm always drawn to working with French people -- and frenching French people," she quipped. "Vive la France!"
Despite lukewarm reviews, Madonna's hip hop-influenced new album "Hard Candy", co-written and produced with former N-Sync singer Justin Timberlake, and hip hop stars Timbaland and Pharrell Williams, shot straight to the top of the charts in France and across Europe upon its release last week.
Madonna has described the title as "a juxtaposition of tough and sweetness" -- but her performance in Paris was tough from start to finish.
Flanked by an electriying crew of hip-hop dancers and surrounded by pulsing video screens, Madonna ground, bumped, skipped and jumped her way through four of her new tracks -- including the chart-topping "Four Minutes" -- as well as the now classic "Music" and "Hung Up".
The magician's gear and heeled boots quickly gave way to dance-friendly running shoes and sleeveless black top, before she pulled out the saturated electric guitar for a heavy-metal sounding finale.
"Hard Candy" is Madonna's last album on the Warner label before she takes up her astronomical 120-million-dollar (78-million-euro), 10-year deal with US concert promoter Live Nation.
The Paris gig was the second of three private concerts being held to mark its launch, after New York on April 30 and before London on May 11.
One third of tickets went to listeners of the French radio station NRJ, which organised the French event, with the rest snapped up by VIPs and fans in the know, from France and elsewhere.
Andrew Stewart, 37, has seen Madonna 17 times on stage since 1987 and flew in from Thailand specially to catch the show.
"She's just the most amazing performer," said the British web designer. "She doesn't compare to anyone."

'I love to french the French', a dit Madonna aux fans de Paris.

This time Madonna stayed at Le Bristol hotel in Paris. She arrived Sunday morning and did rehearsals at the Palais des Congrès. Then she went back to her hotel via the parking of the street rue de Penthièvre, very secure: all the persons who wanted to go in the parking had to show their identity card before.
The Bristol hotel had to quickly make big black curtains for the windows of her bedroom (in front of the garden) so that no light enters the room.

Madonna, Minogue in unofficial competition

London, May 3 : Pop superstar Madonna and Australian singer Kylie Minogue will unofficially compete with each other as both are set for a concert in France.
Minogue will be launching her tour in Paris and Madonna will be performing a free concert nearby, mirror.co.uk reported. Minogue, who turns 40 soon, is under pressure to put up a great show as Madonna will be a sure crowd puller.
An inside source said: “The pressure is on Kylie to compete with Madge (Madonna) as she draws in crowds for a free gig just across town in the Olympic stadium.”
The odds are stacked against Minogue as her album managed to peak only at No.139 on the Billboard charts.

Madonna and Kylie Minogue's battle royale

The battle of the corsets will be unleashed on an unsuspecting French public next week as Her Madgesty goes head to head with Kylie.
While the Aussie beauty launches her X 2008 tour in Paris next Tuesday, Mads will be doing a free gig nearby
.
Kylie, who turns 40 this month, had better have something spectacular up her sleeve when she kicks off at the Bercy Arena, as Madge is limbering up for quite a fight.
An insider said: "The pressure's on Kylie to compete with Madge as she draws in crowds for a free gig just across town in the Olympic stadium."
Madge will also launch her assault on the US media this month to promote Hard Candy.
Let's hope it goes better than Kylie's attempt to break the US last month - her album X limped into the charts at No.139.
