In 1985, Timothy Sullivan, mayor of Bay City at the time, declared "No key to the city for Madonna" after reports surfaced that nude photos of the 26-year-old popstar would be unveiled in Penthouse and Playboy magazines. The Material Girl and the City by the Bay have been estranged ever since.
Now, Mayor Charles M. Brunner hopes Bay City's long-lost offspring will return and finally accept a key to the city. City Commissioner Christopher J. Shannon is planning a Madonna tribute album from local musicians, and Guy Greve, president of the Bay Arts Council, wants to erect a statue of the Material Girl.

Getting into the Groove: Bay City mayor offers Madonna key to the city

The quest to reach out to Bay City's most famous offspring has begun.
Mayor Charles M. Brunner has drafted a letter inviting Madonna to come home to Bay City and finally accept a key to the city.
City Commissioner Christopher J. Shannon, frontman for a local rock band, is planning a Madonna tribute album in which he hopes to recruit local musicians to cover hits such as "Like a Virgin," "Express Yourself" and "Vogue."
Guy Greve, president of the Bay Arts Council, wants to go as far as commissioning an artist to sculpt a statue of Bay City's Material Girl.
"The local arts council would like to pay homage for her artistic contributions," he said. "I could see a sculpture of her in Bay City. One of Madonna's famous poses could be made into a sculpture."
Brunner said he has e-mailed a letter to Madonna's father, Silvio "Tony" Ciccone, who owns a vineyard in Suttons Bay.
"I sent it to the winery initially, because that was the only e-mail address I had," Brunner said.
"And I did get an e-mail back," he said. "They gave me, I believe, his personal e-mail address, so I sent him an e-mail and a copy of the letter inviting her to Bay City - so hopefully maybe something happens through her father."
Brunner is hopeful his words will atone for the actions of past city officials who have rejected Madonna on multiple occasions - much to the dismay of Madonna's family still living here, including her 96-year-old grandmother.
Madonna, who was born in Bay City in 1958 and spent a considerable portion of her childhood visiting family here, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this past month.
That prompted city leaders to reconsider bestowing upon her the infamous key to the city that Mayor Timothy G. Sullivan refused to give her in 1985, when Madonna was considered, by some, too risque for such an honor.
City officials in the late 1980s also refused to accept a professional sculpture of Madonna from an Italian artist, citing a belief that her popularity would fade out in time.
Nearly three decades since her rise to fame, that notion has failed to come true - Madonna remains a worldwide cultural icon.
Just this week, she knocked Elvis Presley from the history books, charting her 37th Top 10 hit with her new single "4 Minutes," a duet with Justin Timberlake. Presley officially was nudged from his standing as the artist with the most Top 10 hits in rock history, according to Billboard.com.
"Far and wide, she wields significant influence in the arts and entertainment world," said Shannon, Bay City's 1st Ward Commissioner. "For Bay City to turn its back on that, it would be a shame."
Perhaps best known locally for calling Bay City a "smelly little town" on national television two decades ago - a reference to a former oil refinery that once polluted the city - Madonna graces the cover of Vanity Fair this month, holding the world in her hands for the magazine's third-annual "Green" issue - her 10th cover for the magazine.
Local leaders say she's a living example to anyone growing up in Bay City with dreams of making it big in the arts world.
Since moving to New York City on a whim in 1978, Madonna has gone on to sell more than 200 million albums worldwide, as well as author children's books and star in and direct films.
Today, she lives with her husband, British film director Guy Ritchie, and three children in London.
Brunner notes that he met Madonna's father in January at the Great Lakes Environmental Film Festival. Tony Ciccone catered the wine for the inaugural event at the State Theatre in Bay City.
Brunner
, a former rock band drummer, is hoping he'll make a lasting connection with Madonna and her family, though he was unsuccessful in reaching out to her longtime friend and publicist Lis Rosenberg, who did not return e-mails from Brunner or The Times.
"I'll do what I can," Brunner said. "I've got a one-page letter. I hope she gets an opportunity to read it. We'll just keep working on it."
Martin Ciccone, Madonna's older brother in Beverly Hills, told The Times that Bay City should invite Madonna to town and give her the key for her 50th birthday on Aug. 16.
"I'd say go for it," he said. "I cannot tell you what she would do. I want to say, yeah."
Shannon said that would be great, but as a founding member of Bay City's Hell's Half Mile Film & Music Festival, he's partial to having the singer slip into town, oh say, in mid-October.
"We could even play one of her films," he said.

Les plus grands succès de Madonna sont de grandes blessures.

Tuesday, March 11th 2008, 9:38 PM

She loves for us to look at her, but Madonna isn't so keen on looking at herself.
Well, at least younger versions of herself.
On Monday night, Her Madgesty was in the kitchen of the Waldorf's Grand Ballroom, waiting to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Surrounded by her handlers, she watched a TV monitor that let her see the career retrospective that the crowd in the dining room and across the country was seeing. There she was in the wedding dress. There she was in the coned bra and the riding crop.
She groaned. "Oh, look at my eyebrows," she sighed. "Oh, stop, stop!"
A VH1 cameraman began to film her anguish. He was told to cease and desist.
Finally, the public trial of her fashion crimes became intolerable. She covered the screen with the pages of her acceptance speech.
Taking the stage, she delivered a summary of her success that walked the line between self-congratulation and genuine appreciation for those who'd helped her, and even those who tried to hold her down (which only spurred her on).
Her remarks seemed to touch a chord even among hardened showbiz vets. Tom Hanks' eyes teared up as she recalled her early days learning guitar in a New York synagogue.
After the awards, Chris Rock, Guy Oseary and other close friends joined her at Nobu on W. 57th St. There she took exception with presenter Justin Timberlake's claim that she'd told him he had "a nice top shelf" after gaving him a butt injection of B-12 during a recording session.
"I don't even know what a 'top shelf' is," she said.
Some wondered why her husband, Guy Ritchie, wasn't there for her big night. But Ritchie, working on his next movie in the U.K., called to wish her luck before she went on stage.
P.S.: We hear Madonna's eighth world tour is a definite go. She confirmed to friends that she's already auditioning dancers for an international series of concerts at the end of summer. (One gig may coincide with her 50th birthday on Aug. 16, but it's unlikely to be in Central Park, as previously rumored.)
Let's hope she picks some costumes that won't make her grimace 20 years from now.

Justin salue la reine de la pop Madonna comme elle entre au Hall de Gloire.

11 MARCH 2008

As one of the most successful female recording artists of all time Madonna has enjoyed a glittering career full of record-breaking feats and prestigious accolades. And she's just added another honour to her list of achievements - on Monday night the queen of pop was inducted into the US Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
Sexyback singer Justin Timberlake, who's joined forces with the Material Girl on new track 4 Minutes (To Save The World), was on hand to present the 49-year-old with a trophy at the New York ceremony. As he took to the stage he dropped to one knee in front of the queen of pop before saying: "The world is full of Madonna wannabes - I might have even dated a couple! - but there is truly only one Madonna".
Artists are eligible for induction into the US Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 25 years after their first recording. Madonna, who scored her first hit with Holiday in 1983, now joins the ranks of music greats Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley and James Brown.
"I have gone on to do so many things in my life, from writing children's books to designing clothes to directing a film," said the delighted entertainer, "but for me it always does, and it always will, come back to the music. So thank you."
Punk rockers Iggy Pop and The Stooges performed two songs in Madonna's honour, giving two of her biggest hits, Burning Up and Ray Of Light, their own unique take.

Les Stooges conduisent Madonna dans le hall.

BRIAN MCCOLLUM
March 11, 2008

So you want to shore up your rock and roll credentials?
Just grab the most rock and roll band around.
With typical flair and bravado, Madonna unleashed the Stooges on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an institution that has otherwise turned its back on the pioneering Detroit band. On a black-tie Monday evening at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the night's most dubious honoree delivered the night's most legitimate moment.
Iggy Pop and company careened through a pair of Madonna songs -- ripping the pop sheen right off of "Burning Up" and "Ray of Light" -- to consecrate their fellow Michigan icon's induction into the rock hall. The selection of pop queen Madonna had been criticized by many rock fans leading into Monday night, and the Stooges offered an ideal antidote.
It was the Stooges' moment of glory, but this was still Madonna's moment. Appearing moved and genuinely humbled, she gave a smart, classy induction speech that thanked those who had "fueled my dreams," such as Detroit dance teacher Christopher Flynn.
She looked back on a career that "feels like a career of 'suddenlys' " -- a journey in which "the universe would conspire to help me and guide me all the way up to this moment where I am standing in front of you."
Madonna brought metro Detroit's Hall of Fame tally to 16 acts -- more than 10% of the total rock hall roster. (And that's not even counting such passersby as Al Green and Del Shannon.)
"I'd now like to introduce another ass-kicker from Michigan," Madonna said as she presented Iggy and his band. The offbeat rendezvous of music legends was one that likely left many casual viewers wondering: What the heck just happened?
Here's what happened: Like many milestones throughout her storied quarter-century career, it was a brilliantly conceived, coolly played maneuver by the Rochester Hills-bred star.
It worked on multiple levels, tidily deflecting skepticism about the pop star's worthiness as a rock and roll immortal. The mere choice of the Stooges was the sort of subversive move that could only bolster Madonna's reputation for defying expectations -- and it doesn't get more rock and roll than that.
And that was before the band even hit the ballroom. Onstage, the group's hot, feisty set provided the most electric moment so far in what had been a relatively low-key night.
Madonna didn't just get to bask in the reflected rock grime of the Stooges. It also allowed her to serve a good cause The rock hall has rejected the Stooges six times since the band became eligible more than a decade ago.
Television viewers watching a commercial-free broadcast of the ceremony saw a smooth, leisurely paced ceremony that felt more like a peek into a private party than a traditional awards show. With honorees John Mellencamp and members of the Dave Clark Five waiting in the wings, Madonna's segment followed induction rites for the Ventures, Leonard Cohen and Gamble & Huff.

Madonna mène la Classe du Hall of Fame de 2008.

Monday, March 10, 2008
Adam Graham / Detroit News Pop Music Writer

NEW YORK -- Madonna was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday, and like everything Madonna does, she did it in style.
During a ceremony at Manhattan's ritzy Waldorf-Astoria hotel, Michigan's Material Girl was inducted by Justin Timberlake via an innuendo-laden speech that played off of Madonna's sexually rambunctious past, and was serenaded by Ann Arbor rockers Iggy and the Stooges -- not members of the Rock Hall, mind you -- who performed a gutter punk version of Madonna's 1983 hit "Burning Up" and an in-your-face, tongue-in-cheek rendition of "Ray of Light."
"Ray of Light" -- performed by a shirtless Iggy, who ran up and down the stage and entered the crowd to mess with those in the first row -- at first seemed to confuse Madonna, who could be seen awkwardly shifting her eyes during the song. But by the end Madonna was laughing -- she got the joke -- and she met Iggy backstage, embraced him with a hug and marched with him and Timberlake to the hotel's press room, where they briefly paused for photos.
But for all the boundary-pushing that has marked much of Madonna's career, her acceptance speech was honest and sincere (though she did, in typical Madonna style, manage to drop two F-words). Dressed in a see-through black dress, tall black boots and with her blond hair teased out into two big poofs, she began by thanking Christopher Flynn, her ballet teacher from when she was a teenager in Detroit. She said Flynn told her she was special and that she needed to believe in herself, which she said was valuable advice at that point in her life.
Madonna went on to thank those who helped shape her career, from the A&R guy who discovered her to Seymour Stein, who signed her to Sire Records in 1982. She then thanked her collaborators throughout the years, saying, "For me, it always does, and it always will come back to the music."
It was odd, then, that she opted not to perform at the ceremony, and to cede the stage to Iggy and the Stooges (an idea first pitched by Madonna herself, according to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame CEO Joel Peresman). But it was a rebellious move, which is in fitting with Madonna's style, and the clip of Iggy tearing and trashing through "Ray of Light" is sure to become one of this week's most-passed around clips.
Also inducted into the Rock Hall on Monday were producers/songwriters Gamble & Huff ("If You Don't Know Me By Now"), late bluesman Little Walter, instrumental rockers the Ventures, and British Invasion rockers the Dave Clark Five, whose lead singer, Mike Smith, died last month. "At least Mike knew he was a Hall of Famer," said Clark.
Stars in attendance at the event included Chevy Chase, "SNL" head writer and "Weekend Update" anchor Seth Myers, Christy Turlington, Ed Burns, Michael J. Fox and comedian Richard Belzer.

Le Rock and Roll Hall of Fame introduit Madonna et Cohen.

By Michelle Nichols Reuters - Tuesday, March 11 05:55 am

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Madonna spoke of being possessed by magic as she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday along with Leonard Cohen, rocker John Mellencamp, pop band The Dave Clark Five and instrumental group The Ventures.
"I felt like I had been possessed by some magic and luckily for me I have been miraculously and continuously possessed by some kind of magic," Madonna said at the annual Hall of Fame ceremony in New York.
"I have gone on to do so many things in my life, from writing children's books, to designing clothes, to directing a film. But for me it always does, and it always will, come back to the music, so thank you," she said.
Madonna, 49, was inducted by pop star Justin Timberlake, who has co-written and co-produced half the songs on her new album "Hard Candy," which is released next month. "Nobody has gotten into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame looking this damn fine," he said. "You're no old museum piece."
Madonna made her debut in 1982 and her first album "Madonna", including hits such as "Holiday," "Borderline" and "Lucky Star", helped her become one of the best-selling pop artists, with more then 200 million albums sold worldwide.
Artists become eligible for the Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first single or album and are represented in an exhibition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland, Ohio.
While The Dave Clark Five and Mellencamp had been nominated before, this was the first year Madonna was eligible. Iggy & The Stooges performed rock versions of her pop hits "Burning Up" and "Ray of Light" after her induction.

When Madonna orders you to drop trou, you drop trou, Justin Timberlake admitted while inducting the pop diva into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Monday night in New York.
Madonna
, 49, offered the "SexyBack" singer, 27, a B-12 shot – and, apparently, not in the arm – last year while they were working on her new album, Hard Candy, he explained to the audience inside the Waldorf-Astoria ballroom.
He thought she was going to call a doctor for the injection, but instead, "She proceeds to pull a Ziploc bag of B-12 syringes out [of her purse] and says, 'Drop 'em.'
"I don't know what you say to that, so I immediately dropped my pants. She gave me a shot in my a-- and looks at me and says, 'Nice top shelf.' That was one of the greatest days of my life."
Correcting him when she took the stage, Madonna said, "Everything he said is basically true, but I didn't say 'drop 'em,' I said, 'pull your pants down.' I like to be accurate because you know I am a control freak."

Sexually Charged Speech
Timberlake's sexually charged speech praised Madonna for her "shapely body of work" and how she's "always been a woman on top" who "fully enjoys that position."
Madonna, naturally, wasn't one to curb her tongue herself – revealing that she and legendary A&R exec Michael Rosenblatt "did a tab of ecstasy and danced the night away" when she met him back in her days as a rising star.
Madonna blamed Timberlake for the innuendos in her speech, saying, "He's rubbing off on me. He's bringing sexy back." Turning to him, she said, "I'll get you, f-----!"
Timberlake took a few shots at past love Britney Spears, saying that in between changing the face of music and becoming a music icon, Madonna "found time to publicly kiss someone I may or may not have kissed myself – while I was in the audience. Of course, you all know who I'm talking about: Sean Penn."
Referring to the number of "Madonna wannabes" out there, he said, "I might have even dated a couple of them. But there is truly only one Madonna."

In one of the most memorable Hall of Fame performances, Iggy Pop performed his own versions of Madonna's hits, "Burnin' Up" and "Ray of Light," gyrating shirtless on stage before jumping into Madonna's lap in the audience.
"It was a lot of fun," she told him in the kitchen after the performance. "Well done."

Other Inductees
Other honorees included John Mellencamp, who was inducted by Billy Joel, The Ventures, Leonard Cohen, and the Dave Clark Five, who were inducted by Tom Hanks.
