Madonna a son 43e n° 1 au Dance/Club Play Songs avec "Turn Up The Radio".

From Chart Beat Billboard:

Madonna Notches 43rd No. 1 on Dance/Club Play Songs
by Gary Trust | August 27, 2012 10:35 EDT

The Queen of Pop reigns again with 'Turn Up the Radio,' extending her mark for the most leaders in the chart's archives. She also closes in on even bigger Billboard chart history.
Madonna earns her record-extending 43rd No. 1 on Billboard's Dance/Club Play Songs chart, as "Turn Up the Radio" lifts 2-1. (The ranking will refresh on Billboard.com Thursday, Aug. 30.)
"Radio" is Madonna's third Dance/Club Play Songs No. 1 from "MDNA," which bowed atop the Billboard 200 the week of April 14. "Give Me All Your Luvin'," featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., led the week of March 31, while "Girl Gone Wild" reached No. 1 just three weeks later.
"Radio" is headed for radio, too: Interscope Records begins seeking airplay for the song at mainstream top 40 stations on Sept. 25.
With her 43rd leading title on Dance/Club Play Songs, Madonna pulls further away from runner-up Janet Jackson, who has 19. Beyonce and Rihanna follow with 18 No. 1s each, trailed by Kristine W (16) and Mariah Carey (15).
Looking forward, with one more No. 1 on Dance/Club Play Songs, the Material Girl would claim even more historic honors.
Upon her latest coronation, Madonna is now one No. 1 away from tying George Strait's record for the most toppers on any single Billboard chart. The King of Country has sat at the Country Songs chart's throne with 44 titles between 1981 and 2009. With one more No. 1 on Dance/Club Play Songs, the Queen of Pop would tie Strait for unmatched Billboard chart royalty.
Given her multi-format appeal, as opposed to Strait's status as a country-exclusive act (and an unparalleled one, at that), Madonna leads not only Strait but also all artists for the most No. 1s on all Billboard charts combined. With "Radio" ruling Dance/Club Play Songs, Madonna logs her record-extending 156th leader on an active, current-based domestic Billboard survey.
Here's a breakdown of Madonna's No. 1 sums on active, current-based U.S. charts: 43, Dance/Club Play Songs; 33, Hot Dance Singles Sales; 15, Hot Singles Sales; 12, Billboard Hot 100; 9, Radio Songs; 9, Music Video Sales; 8, Billboard 200; 7, Dance/Mix Show Airplay; 5, Adult Contemporary; 4, Internet Albums; 3, Digital Albums; 2, Dance/Electronic Albums; 2, Digital Songs; 2, Hot Digital Tracks; 1, Pop Songs; 1, Tastemaker Albums.
Here is an updated look at Madonna's 43 Dance/Club Play Songs No. 1s, beginning with the double-sided single "Holiday"/"Lucky Star," which reached the top the week of Sept. 24, 1983. (For titles that spent multiple weeks at No. 1, total frames in the lead are noted in parentheses).

Songs About Faith: 20 Tunes Rocking Religious Themes
Posted by Pat Pemberton
22/04/2011

Singing about religion is a risky proposition for a secular act. Skeptical lyrics have the potential to seriously offend the public (remember when radio stations banned John Lennon's 'Imagine?') and/or alienate one's own fanbase. The flip side is that overly preachy or adoring songs can sound pretty square (which is why Christian rock often sounds so much like . . . Christian rock). Yet, some of the best songs with religious themes have been penned -- with great outcomes -- by rock, soul and pop acts. We count down our 20 favorite below.

20- 'Judas' Lady Gaga (2011)
19- 'Picture of Jesus' Ben Harper With the Blind Boys of Alabama (2004)
18- 'Intervention' Arcade Fire (2007)
17- 'God Is Love' Marvin Gaye (1971)
16- '40' U2 (1983)
15- 'Jesus Walks' Kanye West (2004)
14- 'Monkey Gone to Heaven' The Pixies (1989)
13- 'Dear God 2.0' The Roots Feat. Monsters of Folk (2010)
12- 'God Is Real' India.Arie (2002)
11- 'I Say a Little Prayer' Aretha Franklin (1967)
10- 'Have a Talk With God' Stevie Wonder (1976)
09- 'Letter to God' Sheryl Crow (2005)
08- 'Laughing With' Regina Spektor (2009)
07- 'One of Us' Joan Osborne (1995)
06- 'Tears of God' Los Lobos (1987)
05- 'Jesus Is Waiting' Al Green (1973)
04- 'Spirit in the Sky' Norman Greenbaum (1969)
03- 'Jesus is Just Alright' The Doobie Brothers (1972)
02- 'Turn! Turn! Turn!' The Byrds (1965)
01- 'Like a Prayer' Madonna (1989)
It was fitting that a singer named Madonna would write a song with gospel themes. But many churchgoers refused to welcome Madge with open arms after the release of this song, which seemed to be about Madonna's Catholic upbringing with a metaphor about a kneeling sex act. The video, complete with burning crosses and stigmata, added fuel to the fire.

Adele breaks Madonna's album record and closes in on Bob Marley
London singer's 21 tops UK charts for 10th consecutive week, eclipsing record of material girl at height of popularity in 1990
Caspar Llewellyn Smith
guardian.co.uk, Monday 4 April 2011 18.06 BST
Last modified at 00.07 BST on Tuesday 5 April

It was a record held by Madonna for 21 years but Adele has broken it with her second album, coincidentally entitled 21, which on Sunday topped the UK charts for the 10th consecutive week – the longest ever for a UK album by a female solo artist.
Remarkably, more than 257,000 copies of the album were bought in the UK last week, a week-on-week increase of 65% – the strongest seven-day sales figures for the record yet.
The 22-year old released 21 in January, since when it has also topped the album charts in 17 European countries and the US.
The London-born singer's debut album 19 also held steady at no 2 in the UK charts on Sunday, seeing off competition from Ronan Keating's collaboration with Burt Bacharach, When Ronan Met Burt.
The effect of Mother's Day was a factor but this alone failed to account for Adele's success, according to Martin Talbot, managing director of the Official Charts Company.
"This is notoriously one of the quietest times of the year for the record industry, so what she has achieved is astonishing," he said.
"She has gone from being a promising young artist, who existed slightly in the slipstream of acts like Duffy, to become the biggest act in the UK by a country mile.
"To do so well, you've often got to be quite cheesy, but she's the opposite of cheese – she's popular right across the spectrum."
The record was set by Madonna's 1990 Immaculate Collection, a compilation.
The last act to spend 10 straight weeks at no 1 with a studio album was Dire Straits with Brothers in Arms in 1986. The album with the record for the most consecutive weeks at no 1 is Bob Marley and the Wailers' Legend, a compilation which achieved 12 weeks in 1984.
On Monday, Ladbrokes was offering odds of 1/6 on Adele beating that record.
"Adele looks set to smash Marley's record and in the process could set one which lasts for just as long," said a Ladbrokes spokesman.
The success of Adele's two albums has also boosted the fortunes of her record label, the independent XL.
In the year to date, it has enjoyed a 9% share of the UK market, whereas the weakest performing of the major labels – EMI Music – accounted for only 12%. Between them, Adele's two albums have sold more than 2.2m copies in the UK this year.
"There is none of the scandal that helped sell Amy Winehouse," said Alexis Petridis, the Guardian's chief pop critic.
"Adele did go to the Brit School but she doesn't sound like the product of endless focus groups – she just seems normal, and there's something attainable and lovely about that."
Also in the top 10 albums chart on Sunday were new entries of wildly different pedigree: X Factor singer Mary Byrne, who charted at no 6; Radiohead, who reached no 7 with the CD release of The King Of Limbs; and Britney Spears, whose comeback album Femme Fatale charted at no 8.
The only disappointment for Adele, who starts a UK tour on Thursday 14 April, was that her song Someone Like You was knocked from the no 1 slot on the singles chart.

by Paul Sexton, London | April 04, 2011 8:20 EDT

With XL Recordings' Adele continuing to rewrite the U.K. album sales record book, Jennifer Lopez scored her third No. 1 single in the territory yesterday (Sunday) with "On The Floor" (Def Jam/Universal), featuring Pitbull.
Adele's current release "21" achieved easily its biggest weekly sales total, a spectacular 257,000, to start a tenth week atop the album countdown, as its predecessor "19" continued at No. 2. "21" thus overtakes Madonna's "The Immaculate Collection" for most consecutive weeks at No. 1 ever by a female artist on the U.K. chart; her next target, next weekend, will be to match the aggregate female record of  11 non-consecutive weeks, jointly held by Shania Twain's "Come On  Over" in 1999 and Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" (1996).
The current Adele album has now ruled the U.K. chart for longer than any individual artist album since Dire Straits' "Brothers In Arms," which led the way for ten straight weeks in January-March 1986. That album had spent four previous weeks at No. 1, in two runs of two  weeks, prior to that sequence.
"21" is also the first album in U.K. chart history to sell in excess  of 100,000 units for each of its first ten weeks on release. Its massive haul last week was attributable in part to the increased overall sales market in the lead-up to Mother's Day (Sunday), which also helped "19" towards another 73,000 sales, according to the Official Charts Company. "21" now has total U.K. sales to Saturday of 1,754,000, and "19" has reached 1,196,000.
The "21" smash "Someone Like You" did however lose the singles crown after five aggregate weeks to Lopez, who previously topped the U.K. survey with "Love Don't Cost A Thing" in 2001 and "Get Right." "On The Floor" sold a sturdy 133,000 units last week.
"Someone Like You" fell to No. 2 as "Party Rock Anthem" (Interscope/Universal) by LMFAO featuring Lauren Bennett and Goonrock soared 22-3. British R&B artist Katy B debuted at No. 8 with "Broken Record" (Rinse Recordings/Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment).
Also on the album chart, Ronan Keating and Burt Bacharach's collaboration "When Ronan Met Burt" (Polydor/Universal) moved up 5-3, vocal harmony group the Overtones' "Good Ol' Fashioned Love" (Warner  Music Entertainment) 6-4 and Rihanna's "Loud" (Def Jam/Universal) 7-5.
Then came three new entries, for "X Factor" season seven finalist Mary Byrne's "Mine & Yours" (Sony Music Entertainment) at No. 6, Radiohead's "The King of Limbs" (Ticker Tape/XL Recordings) at No. 7 and Britney Spears' "Femme Fatale" (Jive/Sony Music Entertainment) at No. 8. Eva Cassidy's latest posthumous collection "Simply Eva" (Blix Street) climbed 19-10. On the compilation chart, "Massive R&B - Spring  2011" (Rhino/UMTV) moved into a third week at No. 1.

Adele equals Madonna album record
28 March 2011 Last updated at 08:14 GMT

Adele has matched Madonna's record with nine weeks at number one in the UK album chart - the longest for a female solo artist.
Her second album, 21, has now spent the same length of time at the top spot as Madonna's first greatest hits record, The Immaculate Collection, in 1990.
The Londoner's debut album, 19, remained at number two.
Meanwhile in the singles chart, the singer's track Someone Like You climbed back up to number one.
Last week the song was toppled by Nicole Scherzinger's Don't Hold Your Breath after previously spending four weeks at the top of the chart.
Adele still has two other singles in the top 40 - Rolling in the Deep at number nine and Make You Feel My Love at 36, the Official Charts Company said.
The singer-songwriter is also enjoying continued success in the US, where 21 also regained the number one spot in the Billboard album chart last week.
Earlier in the year she became the first living artist since the Beatles to have two top five hits in the UK single and album charts simultaneously.
Elsewhere in the singles chart, Just Can't Get Enough by Black Eyed Peas rose 12 places to three, while Comic Relief single Gold Forever by The Wanted and former number one Price Tag by Jessie J fell each fell one to four and five respectively.
The highest new entry was Peter Kay and Susan Boyle's Comic Relief single, I Know Him So Well at 11.
In the album chart, The Strokes scored the highest new entry at three with Angels, while When Ronan Met Burt by Ronan Keating and Burt Bacharach went in at number five.

Singer Adele has achieved yet more groundbreaking chart success, matching Madonna with nine weeks at No 1 - the longest for a female solo artist.
Her current album, 21, has now spent the same length of time at the top spot as Madonna's greatest hits, The Immaculate Collection.
Adele's debut album, 19, stayed at No 2. She has now held the top two positions in the album chart for three of the past five weeks.
The Londoner's emotionally charged track Someone Like You was back at No 1 in the singles countdown a week after being toppled by Nicole Scherzinger's Don't Hold Your Breath.
Adele still has two other singles in the top 40, Rolling in the Deep at No 9 and Make You Feel My Love at 36.
The singer-songwriter is also enjoying success Stateside, having regained the No 1 spot in the Billboard album chart in recent days.
A more surprising chart success was achieved by Welsh opera singer Wynne Evans, who performed an advert jingle for insurance website Go Compare.
His debut album, A Song in My Heart, went in at No 40 in the official album chart and No 1 in the classical chart.
Evans called his success "one of the most amazing moments of my career".

Adele equals Madonna record as she regains chart double
by Chris Cope, Posted Mar 28, 2011

Adele has equalled the record for the longest time a female solo artist has enjoyed a UK No. 1 album, matching Madonna's nine weeks.
The UK charts assumed a familiar look on Sunday (27 March) after Adele regained her chart double -- and with her album '21' staying put in No. 1 yet again, it meant the singer equalled the nine week record that Madonna's 'The Immaculate Collection' set in 1990.
Adele had lost her No. 1 single accolade the week before (20 March) as Nicole Scherzinger nipped in to grab the gold medal, as previously reported by AOL Music.
Adele had been enjoying a No. 1 single and album for a number of weeks before Scherzinger had the chutzpah to ruin the party, but all is well again in the Adele camp after her single 'Someone Like You' returned to its No. 1 spot, according to BBC Radio 1.
Elsewhere in the singles chart, The Black Eyed Peas' 'Just Can't Get Enough' rose 12 places to No. 3, whilst Peter Kay and Susan Boyle's 'I Know Him So Well' was a new entry at No. 11.
In the albums chart meanwhile, with Adele's debut '19' at No. 2 The Strokes had to make do with a No. 3 position for their new album 'Angles', with Chris Brown not doing much better - his fellow new entry, 'F.A.M.E', only managed to reach No. 10.

Adele's '21' Ties Beatles, Madonna U.K. Album Charts Record
by Paul Sexton, London | March 28, 2011 12:20 EDT

Adele's epic reign on the U.K. sales charts strengthened again yesterday (Mar. 27), as her "21" album (XL) started a ninth week at No. 1 and its single "Someone Like You" climbed back to the top, 2-1, giving it five of the last six weeks at the summit.
It's just over ten years since any album spent nine weeks in a row at No. 1 in the U.K.; the Beatles' "1" compilation achieved the feat from November 2000 to January 2001. "21" is the first album by a solo female to spend this long at the U.K. peak since Madonna's "The Immaculate Collection" exactly ten years before that, from November 1990 to January 1991.
"21" sold another 156,000 copies last week, according to the Official Charts Company, to take its total sales to Saturday night (26) to 1,496,588. "Someone Like You" sold a further 82,000 units and Adele's first album "19" another 47,000, to post another week at No. 2.
The Strokes' new album "Angles" (Rough Trade) debuted at No. 3, selling 35,000 units. There were also top ten debuts for "When Ronan Met Burt" (Polydor), the collaboration between Irish singer Ronan Keating and songwriting giant Burt Bacharach, at No. 5; Nicole Scherzinger's "Killer Love" (Interscope/Universal) at No. 8  (containing last week's No. 1 single "Don't Hold Your Breath," now down into runner-up spot); and Chris Brown's "F.A.M.E." (Jive/Sony Music Entertainment) at No. 10.
Arriving inside the album top 20 were Duran Duran's "All You Need Is Now" (Tape Modern/Edel) at No. 11, blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa's "Dust Bowl" (Provogue) at a U.K. career-best No. 12, Green Day's live set "Awesome As F**k" (Reprise/Warner Music) at No. 14, and "Up On The Roof - The Very Best of the Drifters" (Rhino/Sony Music Entertainment) at No. 17. "Massive R&B - Spring 2011" (Rhino/UMTV) started a second week atop the compilation chart.
The singles chart also registered a 15-3 rise for Black Eyed Peas' "Just Can't Get Enough" (Interscope/Universal) and a No. 11 debut for the Comic Relief charity fundraiser "I Know Him So Well" (Syco Music/Sony Music Entertainment) by comedian Peter Kay and Susan Boyle.

Top 100 women: art, film, music and fashion
Madonna
The musical queen of reinvention, still in the spotlight in her 50s - on her own terms
Homa Khaleeli
The Guardian, Tuesday 8 March 2011

Gym bunny, earth mother, lady of the manor, material girl and scourge of the Catholic church; if one of Madonna's reinventions doesn't inspire you, there are plenty more. But while her multiple faces might seem calculating one thing she has never tried to tinker with is her own strength.
No matter the decade or the fashion, she has always been frank about her toughness and ambition. People may sneer at her muscular arms, but they miss the point – Madonna is about power. She is still one of the most famous women on the planet, despite nearly 30 years in a notoriously fickle business, and compared with her contemporaries – Michael Jackson and Prince – has remained in the spotlight largely on her own terms.
She inspires not because she gives other women a helping hand, but because she breaks the boundaries of what's considered acceptable for women – talking openly about her desires, refusing to pretend to be gentle, taking younger lovers, allowing her physical strength to be seen, still presenting herself as sexual at 52. The outrage, derision and "how dare she" comments that follow her every move are testament to the fact that the more she changes the more she stays the same.

100 women: how the list was drawn up
The Guardian women's editor explains how our list of inspiring women was compiled to mark the 100th International Women's Day

International Women's Day celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women, so what better way to mark its centenary today than with a list of 100 of the world's most inspirational women?
We wanted to focus on role models from all over the world and from all walks of life. The women on this list have largely achieved astonishing feats in their own right, but most have also in some way, we hope, helped their fellow women. As Madeleine Albright once said: "There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women."
Our starting point was you. Readers provided more than 3,000 suggestions. Then a panel – including Sarah Brown, campaigner; Emma Freud and Brigid McConville of the White Ribbon Alliance; Liz Forgan, chair of the Arts Council; Channel 4 News reporter Samira Ahmed; and, from the Guardian, Madeleine Bunting, Afua Hirsch, Homa Khaleeli, Clare Margetson, Natalie Hanman, Emine Saner and Katharine Viner – whittled down the list.
We have ordered the list by category rather than in a a numerical "power list", because it's impossible to rank women who put their lives at risk for a cause such as Malaya Joya with artists such as Lady Gaga. It's not a power or wealth list but instead it's about an inspirational group of women whose influence will last.
Some of our choices will be controversial, some unknown, some obvious. But we hope they are all thought-provoking. Let us know what you think.

Madonna dans la liste des "Meilleures Vidéos Gay de Tous Les Temps".

The Greatest, Gayest Videos of All Time

From Olivia Newton-John getting "Physical" to the Pet Shop Boys "Domino Dancing," these are our picks for the thirty gayest music videos.

5. Madonna, “Vogue” (1990)
Now these boys are ladies.

4. Frankie Goes to Hollywood, “Relax” (1983)
The quintessential (and once banned) video for gay leather pigs. We can’t stress just how controversial and shocking this was in its day. And how many people still have XXXL FRANKIE SAYS tees in the bottom of their closet.

3. Sigur Ros, “Vidrar Vel Til Loftarasa” (2000)
In this stunning video, two young boys fall secretly in love after one is caught playing with dolls by his homophobic father. It’s a long one, but so worth it for the payoff. Seriously, grab a hankie.

2. Wham! “Club Tropicana” (1983)
It’s not just that it’s the campiest song ever or that George looked so hot back then, but that the video really, really tries to make these lads look butch (to hilarious effect).

1. Olivia Newton-John, “Physical” (1981)
Quivering male butt cheeks within the first 15 seconds? Check! A hand-holding homo plot twist at the end? Check! A flawlessly cheesy, floor-filling tune? Check! And it all happened nearly 30 years ago. Liv wins hands down.

Flashback: "Take A Bow" de Madonna Numéro Un.

Madonna 'Bows' At Number One: Wake-Up Video
Posted 25/02/2011 by Kyle Anderson in Wake-Up Video

By design, Madonna's career has had a number of intense peaks and valleys. When an artist does as much shape-shifting as she does, some stuff is bound to hit big while others fall flat. After hitting a series of home runs at the end of the '80s, the '90s were full of those extremes, but on this day in 1995, she climbed to her highest point yet when "Take a Bow" ascended to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
"Take a Bow" came from Madonna's 1994 album Bedtime Stories, a huge bounce back after the critical and commercial flop that was 1992's Erotica (perhaps Madonna's first misstep as an artist). While Bedtime Stories is considered to be a more radio-friendly move for Madonna, it's actually a fairly radical-sounding album, full of rugged R&B hooks and her first dalliances with the extremes of European dance music (which would be more full explored on 1998's Ray of Light and 2000's Music). It ended up spawning a number of hits for Madonna, including "Secret" and "Human Nature," but "Take a Bow" was by far the biggest smash. Co-produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, it's a lush album-closing ballad full of layers of strings, sexy beats and a creamy melodic center.
When "Take a Bow" hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100, it replaced TLC's "Creep" (which had held on to the pole position for four weeks). It remained there for seven weeks before it was finally replaced by Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It," giving Madonna her longest reign on top of the chart. It also ended up being Madonna's final chart-topper of the '90s (she didn't get back to number one until 2000's "Music," her last chart-topper to date).
The video for "Take a Bow" was in heavy rotation on MTV during the early part of 1995. Directed by Michael Haussman (who also helmed Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" and Justin Timberlake's "SexyBack"), the clip stars Madonna as a woman in love with a bullfighter and is notable for the extended sequence where she appears to masturbate in front of a television. It's an excellent performance from the Material Girl — so convincing, in fact, that she later revealed that the video essentially acted as her audition tape for "Evita."

Lady Gaga breaks iTunes records, says on "drunk diet"
Reuters
3:59 p.m. CST, February 18, 2011
Reporting by Jill Serjeant, editing by Christine Kearney.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" has become the fastest-selling single ever on Apple's iTunes store worldwide, racking up more than one million downloads in five days, Apple said on Friday.
Apple said the song -- a Madonna-influenced dance track that the 24 year-old singer performed after "hatching" from a giant egg at the Grammy Awards -- had hit the No. 1 spot on iTunes in 23 countries.
"Born This Way", the title track of a new album to be released in May, also went straight to the top of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles charts earlier this week.
The flamboyant performance artist also revealed her secret for staying so thin, and how she gets her creative juices flowing.
"I am on the drunk diet," she told Sirius XM radio on Friday.
"I live my life as I want to, creatively. I like to drink whiskey and stuff while I am working. But the deal is I've got to work out every day, and I work out hung over if I am hung over. And it's about the cross-training and keeping yourself inspired. I have to say, I do a ton of yoga," she added.
The singer said in a television interview last weekend that she also smoked marijuana while writing her songs.
After headline-grabbing outfits, live performance stunts and a best-selling tour, Lady Gaga may be turning her thoughts to a possible new career -- in movies.
Asked if she saw herself becoming an actress, she told Sirius XM : "I think at some point, yes. I think I'm sort of destined for that screen at some point."
But if there was a movie of her life, Lady Gaga said she would like to be played by Marisa Tomei -- the Oscar-winning actress from "My Cousin Vinny".
"I am such a Marisa Tomei fan. All my friends call me Marisa when I get angry. Because my New York accent just flies out of my body and I start smacking my gum," she said.

Flashback: "Open Your Heart" de Madonna devient Numéro Un.

Madonna's 'Open Your Heart' Ascends To Number One: Wake-Up Video
Posted 07/02/2011 by Kyle Anderson in Wake-Up Video

The year 2011 is going to be a good one for divas. New albums from Britney Spears and Lady Gaga are already within view, and it's quite likely that we could end up getting new music from Beyoncé before these 12 months are up. Madonna could also check in with new music this year, perhaps adding to her already-large docket of chart-topping hits (she has a dozen to her name so far). On this day in 1987, she picked up her fifth career number one on the Billboard Hot 100 when "Open Your Heart" ascended to that position.
"Open Your Heart" was the fourth single to come from Madonna's massive third album True Blue (which was released back in the summer of 1986). Two of those singles — "Live to Tell" and "Papa Don't Preach" — had already topped the chart, and the title track from True Blue came up just short (it ended up at number three). According to songwriters Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson, the song was written with Cyndi Lauper in mind (the original title was "Follow Your Heart"), though they never actually presented the track to her. Madonna scooped it up, added her own lyrical twist and laid down one of her most confident vocal performances over a punchy pop track.
Not only was the song a big success on radio, but the video also ended up in heavy rotation on MTV (as most of Madonna's videos always did) and picked up plenty of critical acclaim (Madonna was praised for making the clip less about sex and more about innocence and escape). "Open Your Heart" is probably best remembered as the song that accompanied the Material Girl's legendary conical bra during her 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour, but the video remains one of Madonna's best narratives.

Vidéo Musicale Controversée No. 1: "Like A Prayer" de Madonna.

5 Most Controversial Music Videos Ever
May Monten, Contributing writer
WGAL 8 Susquehanna Valley - Jan 21 06:41am

Music videos often try to capture attention by deliberately shocking the audience, which ensures that there will always be many candidates vying for a position on a list of most-controversial videos.
Some of the videos described here were made with serious artistic intent. One is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Another has important things to say about race relations in America at the time that it was made.
Other videos seem more about pushing the envelope just for the sake of doing so, in seeing how much violence, sex, and drug use can be crammed in without turning off the viewers completely.
And one of our selections was not as controversial as people originally thought. Widely spread news reports that it had been banned turned out to be only false rumors.

- Controversial Music Video No. 5: Expect Any Less From This Lady?
'Telephone' By Lady Gaga

- Controversial Music Video No. 4: Award-Winning Controversy
'Jeremy' By Pearl Jam

- Controversial Music Video No. 3: Oh, This Is Just Gross
'(s)AINT' By Marilyn Manson

- Controversial Music Video No. 2: Leave The Monkey Out Of This
'Closer' By Nine Inch Nails

- Controversial Music Video No. 1: Condemned By The Vatican
'Like A Prayer' By Madonna

Madonna's 1989 video "Like a Prayer" came in first in an MTV poll on the top rule-breaking videos of all time. The Vatican spoke out against it, something Madonna seemed to take in stride, as she later dedicated a song, tongue in cheek, to the pope.
In the video, Madonna, in a black nightgown, cuts stigmata in her own palms, dances in front of burning crosses and inside a church, and makes love to a black saint. Meanwhile, a black man is jailed for a rape and murder he did not commit.
The video was originally aired as a commercial for Pepsi, but it was pulled after being shown only once, due the controversy that arose immediately after.
Pepsi paid $5 million to Madonna for this and two other commercials, along with a sponsorship of her upcoming tour. Although Pepsi canceled everything, Madonna got to keep the money.

100 Best Singles of the '90s
by Slant Staff on January 10, 2011

With five songs, Madonna dominates our singles list.

42. Madonna, "Secret."
Despite the common misconception that she often sings about sex, Madonna's songs aren't always sexy. "Secret" is perhaps the finest exception to that rule. As it slinks along a simple R&B backbeat and an unfussy acoustic guitar figure, "Secret" is also one of the most organic-sounding singles of Madonna's career, taking its sweet time to get where it's going and not giving up too much along the way. The arrangement gets off on being withholding, and, at least for one glorious single, so does Madonna: When she sings, "You knew all along/What I never wanted to say," she sounds positively rapturous. JK

36. Madonna, "Deeper and Deeper."
Among Madonna's finest achievements, the angsty pop anthem "Deeper and Deeper" is both an acute distillation of Erotica's smut-glam decadence and the singer's lifelong blond ambition. The song, like its video, practically plays out as an autobiography of the singer's life: Atop sambalicious disco, Madonna delivers a burning, poignant fairy tale of yearning and escape in which she plays both Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. Armond White once praised Madonna for how she took "outsider art inside herself"—which is to say, justified it by personalizing it. The uncontrolled, fierce tension of the song derives from the feeling that Madonna is taking a plunge into some hedonistic abyss of her own liberated, uninhibited making. EG

34. Madonna, "Erotica."
Madonna accepts the burden of her throaty, spent-from-touring voice, which makes Erotica's taunting, aggressive lyrics—an elaborate exploration of sex, from seduction to disease—feel unmistakably honest. The title track, whose opening put-a-record-on scratchiness mirrors that of Madonna's most divisive instrument, is the singer's invitation to the dance, a slithering, sinister snake rising from a gaudily ornate chalice. The beats are, by design, hypnotic—at once alluring and devious. With "Erotica," Madonna promises to get you off, but not without giving you something. EG

16. Madonna, "Ray of Light."
Once the Material Girl made it her mission to bring electronica to the masses, she could have named her collaborator. Her decision to work with William Orbit shows that, for all the flack she's faced for "appropriation," her interest in underground dance music is deep and not wholly commercial. Madonna discovered techno just as she turned 40 and took up Kabbalah, and listening to "Ray of Light," it's easy to imagine Madonna finding in rave culture not just a new image, but a way of expressing her spiritual awakening. The beat is restless and Madonna sings breathlessly, but she exudes contentment: "I feel like I just got home!" Her emotional warmth is what establishes the song as a standout single even in a catalogue as replete with classics as Madonna's. MC

10. Madonna, "Vogue."
Much has been written (specifically on this site) about the cultural impact of the appropriation of queer and nonwhite motifs in Madonna's "Vogue," so I'll focus instead on the song's musical archaeology and influence. Lest I completely ignore its substance, Madonna's message is clear ("Beauty is where you find it"), but the track's origins are part and parcel with its star's mining of gay club trends and Old Hollywood: Inspired by the Salsoul Orchestra's "Ooh, I Love It (Love Break)" by way of Danny Krivit's remix of MFSB's "Love Is the Message," the song has a family tree that even includes producer/DJ Shep Pettibone's remix of Janet Jackson's "Miss You Much" and serves as a sort of musical map of disco. Pettibone recorded "Vogue" with Madonna as a B-side for her single "Keep It Together," making its impact all the more impressive (it would go on to inspire a glut of pop-house copycats) and begging the question: If disco died a decade earlier, what the fuck was this big, gay, fuscia drag-queen boa of a dance song sitting on top of the charts for a month for? SC

Look Back: Madonna's 'Justify My Love' Hits #1
1/5/2011 12:01 AM ET
by RTT Staff Writer

(RTTNews) -  Madonna's "Justify My Love," a single that was included on her greatest hits compilation "The Immaculate Collection," reached number one on January 5, 1991.
The song, co-written by Madonna, rocker Lenny Kravitz and singer Ingrid Chavez, was Madonna's ninth chart-topping single. It took over the top spot from Stevie B's "Because I Love You (The Postman Song)" and held on for two weeks. It was eventually replaced by Janet Jackson's "Love Will Never Do (Without You)."
"Justify My Love" is largely remembered for its video, which was so sexually frank that it was banned by MTV. Featuring fetishistic imagery and partial nudity, the clip stirred so much controversy that Madonna appeared on "Nightline" to defend it.
