Madonna: Première Milliardaire de la Musique Pop?

Aug. 24 2010 - 10:41 am
Clare O'Connor - Filthy Rich

How much would a Las Vegas casino pay to have the Material Girl strutting her 52-year-old stuff across the stage on a nightly basis? If we are to believe the UK’s Sun newspaper, she’d get a $1 billion payday. The tabloid set tongues wagging on both sides of the pond by claiming Madonna is weighing up a billion dollar offer to take up a five-year residency on the Strip.
If this is true, Madonna would become pop music’s first billionaire, joining other female entertainers like Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and Oprah Winfrey on our billionaire ranks. She would also once and for all show the pretender to her crown, Lady Gaga – who beat her by six spots on Forbes’ Celebrity 100 rich list this year – that she still reigns as Queen of Pop.
So, is it true? Don’t be so sure. The Sun’s report is entirely unsourced - it doesn’t even include the standard “insiders tell us” designation. It also neglects to name the casino thought to be making the offer. Still, that didn’t stop media outlets across the world from repeating its claims. Even veteran connoisseur of the rich and famous Robin Leach seems to believe the deal is imminent, reporting the story on his Vegas lifestyle blog.
Luckily, one local paper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, thought to check the Sun’s math:
"My source did some quick math: If Madonna landed in the 4,300-seat Colosseum at Caesars Palace, the most likely suitor, she would have to average $200 a ticket, net $3 million a week and work four or five nights for 50 weeks to make $750 million over five years.
That’s impossible. She’s not going to work 50 weeks,” said the source.
"Celine Dion, one of the best-drawing entertainers in the world, recently announced a new three-year $100 million deal that calls for 70 shows a year.
I am inclined to side with the Review-Journal: $1 billion, even for a five-year contract, and even for a superstar like Madonna, seems outlandish.
One other small, perhaps pedantic concern: the Sun says this deal is worth £500,000,000, which they’ve equated to $1 billion. This hasn’t been the exchange rate for years; it’s more like $770 million. Splitting hairs, maybe, but if the Sun can’t even nail the current exchange rate, how can we trust their claims?
Live Nation, who signed a ten-year, $120 million touring contract with Madonna in 2007, did not reply to Forbes’ request for comment on this story. Watch this space, though.

Madonna et le contrat pour Las Vegas: Analyse.

NORM: Tabloid: Madonna checks Vegas deal
Aug. 21, 2010
Norm Clarke

So what are we to make of the British tabloid report that Madonna is mulling a five-year $1 billion Las Vegas deal?
Let's start with the numbers. They don't work, a local entertainment agent told me Friday.
If, at age 52, she is indeed is being courted by a Las Vegas casino, "I guarantee that number is double inflated," the source said.
Perhaps we should consider the source: the story appeared in the London daily, The Sun, a tabloid known for its sensational twists.
My source did some quick math: If Madonna landed in the 4,300-seat Colosseum at Caesars Palace, the most likely suitor, she would have to average $200 a ticket, net $3 million a week and work four or five nights for 50 weeks to make $750 million over five years.
"That's impossible. She's not going to work 50 weeks," said the source.
Celine Dion, one of the best-drawing entertainers in the world, recently announced a new three-year $100 million deal that calls for 70 shows a year.
Celine's tickets for her five-year run (2003-2007) at Caesars Palace averaged about $135. All of Garth Brooks' tickets at Wynn Las Vegas are locked in at $125 for his five-year deal.
Then there's the Material Girl's comment a few years ago when asked if she would be interested in a resident headliner deal in Las Vegas similar to Celine's.
"That's insane," she was quoted as saying. "I hate Las Vegas. I couldn't bear it for five minutes."
But history tells us time and money are known to change attitudes.
It would come as no surprise if Madonna is being pursued by Las Vegas interests. In a city desperate for more starpower she could be a game changer, our Lucky Star.

La paye de 1 Milliard de dollars de Madonna.

And she’s being sued over her Material Girl clothing range...
12:30, Saturday, 21 August 2010

Madonna has been offered $1 billion for a five-year Las Vegas residency, according to reports.
The Hung Up singer could follow the footsteps of acts such as Celine Dion and Cher who relocated to the gambling capital of America to performing nightly shows at Caesars Palace. Celine’s five-year residency drew nearly three million people to 717 performances, but it’s thought Madge would surpass that.
If the deal goes ahead, Madonna would become the third highest paid female entertainer in the world, behind Oprah Winfrey and American homemaking entrepreneur Martha Stewart. And she may just need the extra cash – the superstar is being sued over her new Material Girl fashion range.
Clothing company LA Triumph has claimed it has been using the Material Girl name for the last 13 years and wants the superstar to desist trading and turn over all the profits she has already made from the line.
In a lawsuit filed this week, LA Triumph stated it had been “continually selling similar clothes in similar retail outlets at similar prices under the Material Girl brand since at least 1997... Madonna and her newfound company do not have the right to trade in the same space under this brand.”
The star’s Material Girl fashion range launched in June; the campaign is fronted by Gossip Girl star and The Pretty Reckless singer Taylor Momsen and is available in US department store Macy’s.

Proposition d'un billion dollar à Madonna pour un contrat de 5 ans à résidence à Las Vegas.

Madonna's One Billion Dollar Jackpot?
20 August 2010 09:46:56

Madonna could earn $1 billion - making her the third richest female entertainer in the world - by signing up for a five year residency in Las Vegas.
Madonna could earn $1 billion by signing up for a five year residency in Las Vegas.
The 'Celebration' singer is said to be in discussions with promoters to establish a run of shows in the glitzy US gambling capital.
If Madonna signs the deal she will be following in the footsteps of other performers such as Elton John, Cher and Celine Dion, who have all made huge sums through Vegas contracts.
If the rumours of the contract being worth $1 billion are true, it would push 52-year-old Madonna up the list of highest earning females in the world. Currently, with an estimated fortune of £208 million, she is in fourth place behind talk show host Oprah Winfrey, host and publisher Martha Stewart and British 'Harry Potter' creator JK Rowling.
It is not known if a Las Vegas residency would conflict with the 'Material Girl' singer's current ten year touring contract with promoters Live Nation, signed in 2007 for a reported £80 million.
Whether she appears in Vegas or not, the singer plans to keep touring and recently auditioned for dancers in London to appear in a proposed tour next autumn.
A source said: "It's going to be her biggest, most unexpected tour to date. She is going back to her New York City roots, with a street/hip-hop feel, and wants to make it a physical, dance-heavy set of gigs."
The as-yet unnamed tour - which is part of Madonna's deal with Live Nation - is expected to net the singer in excess of £100 million.
The singer's last world tour - 'Sticky and Sweet' - finished last September and grossed an estimated $400 million in ticket sales.

Madonna 'offered $1 bn Vegas residency'
Friday, August 20 2010, 11:05 BST
By Robert Copsey, Music Reporter

Madonna could earn $1 billion if she agrees to sign a five-year Vegas residency deal, reports say.
The singer is said to be in talks with promoters which would see her follow in the footsteps of other Vegas acts including Elton John, Celine Dion and Cher.
Metro reports that the deal would push the 'Hung Up' star up the list of the highest paid female entertainers in the world to third position, behind Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart.
It is unclear whether the arrangement would conflict with her ten-year touring contract with Live Nation, signed in 2007 for a reported £80 million.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Madonna was planning a hip-hip tour after road-testing dancers at a nightclub in London's Mayfair.

Liz Smith: Lady Gaga va-t-elle jouer Lady Madonna?

18/08/2010 12:00 am

"WHAT THE hell kind of name is Lady Gaga, anyway?!"

That was Madonna, squaring off with Lady G. on "Saturday Night Live" last year, in a segment that should have been much funnier than it was. Both stars did the best they could with the material, but the real sport was simply seeing the two of them together – The Empress of Pop and the current Queen.
The media is constantly comparing M and G. And naturally placing Madonna in the "envious older star" category and Gaga as the "image-snatching copycat." But even so, fans of both are dying for the singers to collaborate on something.
"Sources" say there could be a video pairing, like the one Madonna did with Britney Spears and Gaga did with Beyoncé. (Although it might be best if Gaga didn’t kiss Madonna at any point. It’s sort of a pop music urban legend that Madonna and Britney’s kiss at the MTV Awards was the beginning of Britney’s downfall. It was supposed to be Madonna "passing the torch," but the joke is "she sucked the life from her!")
Now, a video or a song is always possible between M and G, but the next bit of gossip? Don’t dress and let’s consider the saltshaker. There’s a rumor that Madonna is planning her own biopic and that she’s chosen Gaga to interpret her life.
Ahhhh … first of all, Madonna is one of those always- looking-ahead kind of people. She just turned a youthful 52, and I doubt she’s thinking in terms of biopics or autobiographies. (When she turned 50, I asked her if she’d ever retire. She said, "I will when you do, Liz!" So we agreed to be the last gals standing at the rodeo.)
Second, she’s deep into her directing project – the movie about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, "W.E." This has consumed her more totally than anything she has ever attempted. Music, videos, her past life, her "rivals" are the last thing on her mind.
Third? Gaga has already been so closely associated with lifting many aspects of Madonna’s image, I don’t think she’d play into that by playing M onscreen.
But stranger things have happened in showbiz (Sly Stallone’s big comeback in "The Expendables" !) so we never say never.
