US PRESIDENTIAL candidate John McCain has hit back at Madonna after the singer kicked off her world tour with a concert that appeared to compare him with Adolf Hitler
.
Mr McCain's campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds angrily condemned the segment of Madonna's concert in Cardiff, Wales, on Saturday that appeared to draw a comparison between Mr McCain, Hitler and Zimbabwean strongman Robert Mugabe.
"The comparisons are outrageous, unacceptable and crudely divisive all at the same time,'' Mr Bounds said in a statement, reported by Fox News.
"It clearly shows that when it comes to supporting Barack Obama, his fellow worldwide celebrities refuse to consider any smear or attack off limits.''
Madonna's apparent swipe at Mr McCain came during a performance of the song Get Stupid, when the Republican contender's image was flashed up alongside images of destruction and global warming as well as Hitler and Mugabe.
Towards the end of the song, pictures of Beatles star John Lennon, former US vice-president Al Gore, Indian Mahatma Gandhi and McCain's Democrat rival Barack Obama appeared.

US presidential candidate John McCain
took aim at Madonna after the pop superstar seemingly used her latest world tour to compare the Republican leader to history's most notorious dictators.
The Material Girl kicked off her Sweet + Sticky tour in Cardiff, Wales on Saturday, and featured McCain in a video segment which accompanied the song Get Stupid.
In the footage, watched by thousands of fans, the Republican politician's image was flashed up alongside scenes of destruction, global warming and starving children.
Adolf Hitler and Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe also appeared on-screen.
And McCain's representatives are furious at the singer's comparisons, stating fans of democratic contender Barack Obama will stop at nothing to smear McCain's campaign.
The Republican's spokesman Tucker Bounds says, "The comparisons are outrageous, unacceptable and crudely divisive all at the same time.
"It clearly shows that when it comes to supporting Barack Obama, his fellow worldwide celebrities refuse to consider any smear or attack off limits."
Although Madonna hasn't publicly backed Obama, she featured the popular politician alongside images of beloved cultural icons, including John Lennon, Gandhi and climate control advocate Al Gore

Madonna
, who turned 50 this month, kicked off her Sticky & Sweet Tour on Saturday night at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. The BBC reported that the two-hour show took a political turn when, in a lead-in to a remixed version of “Like a Prayer,” a video sequence showed flashing images of destruction followed by pictures of Hitler, Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and then Senator John McCain. Senator Barack Obama popped up in another video interlude, but his montage included Gandhi, John Lennon and Al Gore. The tour arrives in North America on Oct. 4.
