Sir Elton and David are the latest in a long line of famous faces to become parents through surrogacy or adoption.
Singer Madonna sparked controversy when she adopted David Banda, five, and daughter Mercy, three from Malawi.
Sex And The City star Sarah Jessica Parker, 45, had twin daughters Tabitha and Marion who were born via a surrogate last year.
Former cabinet Minister David Miliband, 45, and his wife Louise, chose to adopt their sons Isaac, five, and Jacob, two, from the US as newborns.
And singer Ricky Martin, 39, became a proud father to boys Valentino and Matte in 2008 with help from a surrogate.
In July this year there was even talk that footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s baby was born through a surrogacy. However, he has stayed tight-lipped on the matter.
Many infertile and gay couples choose to go to America because the laws are more lenient there, particularly in California.
But in some US states, surrogacy agreements are not recognised and in New York it is still illegal.
In Britain an estimated 70 children are born to stand-in mums every year but it is still illegal to pay more than “realistic expenses” to the mother.
Surrogacy agreements are also not legally enforceable and the birth mother does have the right to choose exactly what happens to the child.
