BAY CITY — Three years ago today Madonna was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
Upon her induction, The Times spoke with several members of the pop star's family, including her grandmother Elsie Mae Fortin, who died Wednesday.
Fortin, 99, died in her home at 404 N. Dean St. She was reportedly very close with her famous and Bay City-born granddaughter, having partially raised her since the death of Madonna's mother in 1963.
Madonna was born Aug. 16, 1958, at Mercy Hospital in Bay City.
In 2008, Fortin talked with The Times about her granddaughter as she was set to be immortalized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
"She's done things that I didn't approve of, but at the same time she's my granddaughter and I still love her and I'm proud of her hard work," Fortin said. "She's been good to me."
Fortin enjoyed life in Bay City.
"That's me," she said in 2008. "I'm glad (Madonna) made good in the world, but that wouldn't cause me to live any differently than I do in this funny little house."
Also in 2008, Fortin spoke about her granddaughter's estranged relationship with her one-time hometown.
"I don't think she thought that Bay City liked her too well," Fortin said, noting that Madonna considers Bay City a special place from her past.
