Madonna en couverture du livre "I Want My MTV".

From The Ottawa Citizen:

Book Review: Madonna’s hissy fit and Michael Jackson’s crotch grab
Fun and fascinating book gives behind-the-scenes stories from MTV

I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Revolution
By Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum (Dutton)

Some of the fun facts recounted in I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Revolution:

- When an Epic Records executive started showing a video from a new group called Culture Club for the song Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?, everyone who watched it said, “Man, she’s really ugly.”
- On the shoot of the first video for The Police’s Synchronicity album, lead singer Sting told the director, “Just keep the camera on the money,” and pointed to himself. It was the last album the group would ever record.
- MTV programmers didn’t think much of Guns N’ Roses’ first video Welcome to the Jungle and initially aired it only once or twice after midnight. Then David Geffen called the channel and requested the clip get more airplay. A couple of weeks later, Guns N’ Roses became superstars.
- On the set of the Black or White video, director John Landis had to keep asking Michael Jackson to stop grabbing his crotch and rubbing himself on camera. “Madonna does it. Prince does it,” Jackson pointed out. “You’re not Madonna or Prince,” Landis replied. “You’re Mickey Mouse.”
- When Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares to U beat out Madonna’s Vogue for the Video of the Year award, Madonna was furious (“Sinead O’Connor has about as much sex appeal as venetian blinds”) and Sinead gloated (“I was very pleased to beat the s— out of her.”)

Every page of this fat, addictive, ridiculously entertaining book, which covers the rise and fall of MTV from 1981-1992, is overstuffed with such anecdotes. Authors Craig Marks and Rob Tannenbaum interviewed more than 400 musicians, directors, executives and VJs to create an unusually candid oral history of the music video channel and its enormous impact on pop culture.
Prince, for example, was “cuckoo paranoid,” barely spoke to anyone outside his inner circle, directed most of his videos himself via passive-aggressive tactics, showed up to meetings wearing different-coloured high heel shoes and used so much smoke on the sets of his clips that everyone got diarrhea.
Although it focuses exclusively on the channel, I Want My MTV doubles as a cultural history of the 1980s, showing how the network influenced everything from fashion trends to hairstyles to filmmaking. Pretty much every member of generation X watched MTV obsessively at some period in their lives, so reading about the time Bobby Brown dropped a vial of cocaine on the stage while performing at the Video Music Awards or the uproar that greeted Madonna’s Like a Prayer video feels like leafing through a yearbook of your youth.
There was a time when MTV aired nothing but music, when VJs were huge stars (and treated horribly by their bosses), when President Bill Clinton went on the channel to secure the youth vote, when the world premiere of a new video was the sort of thing you marked down on your calendar.
Like the era it covers, I Want My MTV is filled with excess, drugs, egos and tragedy. It is also a legacy to the music of that decade, some of it garbage, but a lot of it better than you might remember. It also helps to explain the ambivalence most everyone feels about the era: the 1980s weren’t just something you lived through. They were something you survived.

JFK Jr. a demandé à Madonna de poser en sa mère.

From NYPOST:

JFK Jr. asked Madonna to pose as his mother
By SUSANNAH CAHALAN
Last Updated: 1:36 PM, January 1, 2012
Posted: 1:44 AM, January 1, 2012

She was almost the First Lady Madonna.
John F. Kennedy Jr. asked the Material Girl to dress up as his mother for the cover of his magazine, George, but Madonna declined, insisting she wouldnever do [Jackie O] justice,” according to a new book.
We’ll have her in a pillbox hat, sitting on a stack of books,” JFK Jr. told his assistant, RoseMarie Terenzio, author of the memoir, “Fairy Tale Interrupted,” which chronicles her five years as John John’s confidante and publicist until his untimely death in 1999 at the age of 38.
In the summer of 1996, JFK Jr. asked Terenzio who should grace the cover of his SeptemberWomen in Politics” issue.
Terenzio suggested then-First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, but JFK Jr., who co-founded the magazine in 1995, had a different idea.
I think we should dress Madonna up as my mother,” he said. “Wouldn’t that be a riot?
Terenzio thought he was joking; Madonna was then at the height of her bad-girl image.
She warned him it would create a media “s--tstorm.”
And although Terenzio insists it wasn’t among her concerns, the cover would have undoubtedly raised eyebrows given JFK Jr.’s once-rumored romance with Madge, who was often compared to his father’s reputed paramour, Marilyn Monroe.
If it doesn’t bother me, why should it bother anyone else?Kennedy said.
So they drafted a letter to the “Like a Virgin” singer, asking her to pose as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
The next day, Madonna faxed her handwritten response, flirtatiously addressed to “Johnny Boy.”
My eyebrows aren’t thick enough, for one,” she offered.
When you want me to portray Eva Braun or Pamela Harriman, I might say yes!she wrote, referring, bizarrely, to Hitler’s mistress and the British socialite who married New York Gov. W. Averell Harriman and Winston Churchill’s son Randolph.
JFK Jr. eventually tapped actress Drew Barrymore for the cover, portraying, ironically, Monroe in her legendary white halter dress singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.”
Terenzio, whose book is due out on Jan. 24, says there was nothing untoward at the time of the fax between the Material Girl and the heir to Camelot.
In fact, later that month, JFK Jr. married his longtime girlfriend, Carolyn Bessette.

IM-MADGE-INE THAT! Madonna wrote a letter turning down John Kennedy Jr.’s offer to pose as his mom for George magazine — an image that might have looked something like this.

L'illustrateur Loren Long va recevoir la récompense Alumnus 2011.

Official Press Release - Communiqué Officiel de Presse

Acclaimed Illustrator and Author Loren Long to Receive the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Chicago’s Prestigious American Academy of Art

President Obama’s collaborator on children’s bestseller, Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters, to receive major honor Tuesday, May 24.

Press Release Source: American Academy of Art On Tuesday May 24, 2011, 10:30 am EDT

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- What do President Barack Obama, pop icon Madonna and the late Pulitzer Prize-winning author Frank McCourt (of Angela’s Ashes fame) have in common? All three have collaborated with illustrator and former Chicagoan Loren Long on their respective bestselling children’s books.
Given Long’s many successes, it should come as no surprise that he will be the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Alumnus Award from one of Chicago’s oldest and most prestigious art schools: The American Academy of Art.
Long will accept his award and address this year’s graduating class at the Academy’s commencement ceremony at the Chicago Hilton and Towers, 720 South Michigan Avenue, on Tuesday, May 24th at 3 p.m.
Long, a former student of the American Academy of Art, had the privilege illustrating President Obama’s latest book, children’s bestseller, Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters (Knopf). More than 500,000 copies are now in print.
President Obama invited the illustrator to the White House in January for an Oval Office visit along with Long’s two teenage sons, ages 13 and 15. Long says the President was very excited about the book, and how well it was doing, especially because proceeds go to help the children of families and fallen of wounded U.S. military. Long counts the visit among the highlights of his life and career.
Prior to being asked to collaborate with the President, Long had already authored his own bestsellers and had illustrated books for Madonna on her bestseller Mr. Peabody’s Apples (Callaway, 2003), and with McCourt on his children’s tome, Angela and the Baby Jesus (Scribner, 2007).
Long, a Missouri native, enrolled in post-graduate-level coursework at the Academy from 1987-1988, after graduating from the University of Kentucky with a B.A. in graphic and studio arts. Long explains, “After attending the Academy, I was truly ready to become an artist. The Academy’s emphasis on cross-disciplinary instruction, small class size, professionalism and adherence to deadlines helped me establish the skills I needed to work well collaboratively or independently.”
Considering there was amazing talent all around me while I was at the Academy, I’m very honored to receive this award,” Long concluded.
Before gaining fame as a children’s book author and illustrator, Long worked as an illustrator at the Gibson Greeting Card Company in Cincinnati. During that phase in his career, he was also able to gain recognition as an editorial illustrator for numerous magazines and newspapers – including such top-tier publications as Forbes, Time, Atlantic Monthly and Sports Illustrated. Soon thereafter, he also began illustrating book covers for publishers such as Harper Collins and Penguin.
Loren is an inspiration and source of great pride for all of us here at the Academy – including our 2011 graduates, their fellow classmates, and our faculty and staff,” said Richard Otto, the Academy’s president. “We were thrilled when he enthusiastically accepted our invitation to receive this highly coveted and prestigious distinction.”
Two pieces of advice Long wishes to share with graduating students, and that he attributes to helping his own career, include: 1) Be passionate about your own work; and 2) Become a student of the field – study and learn about the area of art that most interests you.
The New York Times calls his “muscular style inspired by 1930’s W.P.A. murals” – a style Long explains he developed by studying the ‘20s and ‘30s American regional artists.
Long’s next book, Otis and the Tornado, is slated for release in autumn 2011. It is a sequel to his 2009 Otis.
A former Chicagoan, Long now lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, with his wife and two teenage sons. For more information, visit www.lorenlong.com.

Loren Long's short bio

Two-time Golden Kite award winner and New York Times #1 bestselling illustrator Loren Long is an artist straight from the heart of America. Born in Joplin, Missouri, and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, Long is a storyteller in pictures who draws on his roots to depict a soulful American landscape peopled with imaginative characters who take on mythic, even heroic, dimensions.
Long graduated from the University of Kentucky with a BA in Graphic Design/Art Studio and went on to do graduate studies at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. For a time he was an illustrator at the Gibson Greeting Card Company in Cincinnati. He gained recognition as an editorial illustrator for numerous magazines and newspapers in the 1990s, most notably Forbes, Time, Atlantic Monthly, and Sports Illustrated. He began illustrating book covers for Harper Collins, Penguin, Houghton Mifflin, and the National Geographic Society. In 1999 Long was commissioned to paint a grand-scale mural for a restaurant in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Long’s work is in the permanent collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum, the U.S. Golf Association’s Museum, and Sports Illustrated magazine. In November 2001 his work was included in an exhibition of noteworthy Ohio illustrators at the prestigious Centro Cultura Recoleta in Buenos Aires.
In 2002, the United Nations chose Long’s “The Firefighter” to hang with 21 other works of art from the Society of Illustrators’ expansive exhibition “The Prevailing Human Spirit.” In 2004 the Art Academy of Cincinnati presented a retrospective of Long’s picture book work.
Long has received numerous accolades for what The New York Times calls his “muscular style inspired by 1930’s W.P.A. murals.” He is a two-time Golden Kite recipient, and won a pair of gold medals in 2000 from the Society of Illustrators in New York.
In the January/February 2006 issue, Loren was featured in Communication Arts International Design Magazine.
Long believes his calling as a storyteller lies in illustrating children’s books, often coupling his art with iconic American literary works. His challenge, met with flying colors if the critics be believed, is to match the soaring poetry of Walt Whitman or the timeless lesson of “the little engine that could” with images as lasting and resonant.
In 2003 superstar singer Madonna chose Long to illustrate her story, Mr. Peabody’s Apples (Callaway), which skyrocketed to #1 on The New York Times Best Seller list.
In the same year, Long won the prestigious Golden Kite Award for best picture book illustration from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators for I Dream of Trains, by Angela Johnson (Simon & Schuster). His illustrations were hailed as “stately paintings” in a Kirkus starred review, and “breathtaking backdrops” by Publishers’ Weekly.
Long won a Golden Kite Honor in 2004 for his illustrations in Walt Whitman’s When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer (Simon & Schuster), which also won the 2004 Parents’ Choice Gold Award. The New York Times said Long’s pictures “make the wonder of the stars, of the imagination rather than the analytical intelligence, as visible to us as it was to Walt Whitman.”
The new edition of Watty Piper’s The Little Engine That Could (Philomel) was published in 2005 and features all-new illustrations by Long. This book was a childhood favorite of his. The book chugged its way to #1 on the NY Times Best Seller List in 2006.
Long hit a home run in 2007 with the first volume of the Sluggers series (formerly named Barnstormers), making his third appearance on the NY Times Best Seller List. Sluggers is a six-volume chapter book series about an 1800s baseball team, published by Aladdin. In addition to illustrating, Long co-authored the books with fellow vintage baseball fanatic Phil Bildner.
In 2008, the holiday picture book Drummer Boy was released, Long's first solo outing as both writer and illustrator. He has followed this up in 2009 by writing and illustrating the New York Times Bestseller, Otis, about a friendly tractor and a calf. Both books are published by Philomel.
In 2010, Loren illustrated President Barack Obama’s book, Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters, published by Knopf Books for Young Readers.
Loren can be found drawing each and every day at his house near Cincinnati, Ohio, where he lives with his family and two Weimaraners.

Madonna personally chose the artists to illustrate her series of five children’s books. Loren’s painting style perfectly fits the mood of Madonna’s story, set in 1949.
Mr. Peabody’s Apples takes place in 1949 in Happville, USA. One Saturday, Mr. Peabody, the beloved elementary school teacher and baseball coach, finds himself all alone on the baseball field. He wonders where everybody is until he sees the bat boy, Billy Little, walking toward him with a sad look on his face. Billy tells him that another student, Tommy Tittlebottom, spread a rumor that Mr. Peabody was a thief after Tommy saw Mr. Peabody taking apples twice from the local market.
Mr. Peabody then shows Tommy that what matters is the truth — not how things appear — and teaches him an unforgettable lesson about how we must choose our words carefully to avoid causing harm to others.
Madonna dedicates Mr. Peabody's Apples to teachers everywhere.

Le livre de Dolce&Gabbana sur Madonna n'est pas un livre de Dolce&Gabbana.

Where to get Dolce&Gabbana's Madonna Book
Posted May 11, 2011

One of our readers ask, after having seen a post on Madonna Scrapbook, where he can get Dolce&Gabbana's Madonna book

From: MadonnaFanForever86
To: Swide
Dear Swide,
I've been dreaming for this moment so long that when I saw the Madonna book by Dolce&Gabbana on this blog called Madonna Scrapbook, I felt like the world was mine. I had to find it at any cost which is why I started searching around, asking everyone that I know where I can find this book, going to every single bookstore in my city (I live in London) desperately BEGGING for a copy... yet, I couldn't find it anywhere. Is it one of these ultra-rare super-limited books that you get to see on websites but you never have the chance to touch or is it still possible to order one? PLEASE let me know and send me a copy, pleasepleaseplease! I can do anything to make this happen: sing all Madonna songs at the top of my lungs (I have a nice voice or so they say), teach you guys all the Madonna dance routines, or I don't know! Let me know

From: Swide
To: MadonnaFanForever86
Dear Depressed Maddy Fan,
Thanks, now we're depressed as well. We actually had no idea that this book existed! Actually, we checked and unfortunately we don't know anything about this book: it's not a Dolce&Gabbana book... YET, we do have a brilliant idea. If you happen to find a copy of this, we can exchange it for a whole Dolce&Gabbana collection of your choice (so you send us the book, we send you EACH and EVERY single piece from our SS 11 collection, FW 12 one, or whichever you prefer!)! We hope to hear from you...

READ EXCERPTS BELOW

- FROM THE AUTHOR’S NOTE:
In the fall of 1977, when I came to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to enter the dance program at the University of Michigan, I thought I knew a thing or two. I had acted professionally in New York City, my hometown. I had posed nude for art classes. … I was a very modern girl.
When I met Madonna Ciccone, my initial assessment, even as I watched her leg soaring into an effortless front extension, was that I had little to learn from any young whippersnapper from Michigan, safety-pinned earlobes or no. I felt no instant flush of warmth and trust the day we met, no recognition of a kindred spirit — in fact all I recall feeling was an almost seismic wariness. But somehow, a few days later, she was my roommate. ... I never knew what hit me.
[On writing the book] The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the story of my knowing her has a lot to do with some themes I actually am interested in: women artists in America, fame vs. non-fame, life vs. life onscreen, and all the ways you can lose your mom.
So here’s my dissertation. But first, I have a request:
Close this book and look at the title again. Read it out loud. Did you? Good. I just want to be really clear about what this is. If you are looking for the dirt on a pre-fame Madonna, there are quite a few volumes of literature out there that will meet your needs better than this one, that will tell you what you expect to be told. I am happy to share with you most of what I remember from that time — and quite a bit more — but it may not be what you are after. Madonna is a spoke in my wheel, a cog in my whirring factory. This book is a lot of things. And even though she’s in it, this book is not about Madonna.
Whit Hill / Nashville, Tennessee

- SCENE: 1977 — UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN, NEW ROOMMATES WHIT AND MADONNA, AT A PARTY
I get baptized in the holy waters of Madonna’s Attention Thing one day late in the fall when Liz, the head of the department, invites all the dancers over to her house for a swimming party. Liz and her husband have a pool.
Madonna and I are very excited about this – a true mingling of the faculty and the students. We will eat good food, dance to funky music, swim in improvised bathing suits, talk about art with our teachers, and perhaps improve our chances for excellent grades.
… We have gotten to the point where we can pretty much talk about anything. And I am quite aware – and happily so – that Madonna has revealed herself to be perhaps the smartest person I know. That she is a good listener is part of her smartness. She seems genuinely curious about things, me included. …
Parties like this can be iffy for me – too much forced conversation, exhaustive smiling and hair-tossing. I’m really making an effort to change and having Madonna for a cohort helps. Whenever I try to weasel out of stuff like this, she nags me mercilessly. She should win some sort of fishwife prize.
And for the first half-hour of so, it’s pretty fun. I have to say, it’s nice to arrive together, for us to be seen as a unit – roommates. Friends.
And then… click.
It’s hard to say if it’s something she actually does, my roomie, or if it’s just that I suddenly notice it: the way she becomes the focus of the room. I can’t fault her for it – what happens is utterly organic, like the way cats watch canaries, the way stars move across the sky, the way people are interested in sex. And the attention spurs it on. At once, she is in her element, laughing, flirting, cussing, dancing at the center of a small crowd in the middle of an ordinary living room.
… it’s her cute little destiny, stretching its wings.

- SCENE: 1980 — NEW YORK CITY, ABANDONED SYNOGOGUE IN QUEENS, WHIT ATTENDS A GIG REHEARSAL FOR HER COLLEGE-ROOMMATE-DANCER-TURNED-POP-SINGER AND BAND
What is it? Why do I feel like running, flying from the room?
Oh, looking back, there’s no doubt about what I was feeling: pure, 100-proof, moonshine-quality jealousy. In the face of her power, her willingness to fail in the service of the larger goal, of her stark beauty and fuck-you drive, I feel like a pigeon, a gray, ordinary pigeon, scared to flapping by the sound of a distant backfire. But I sit there and sit there, song after song. We applaud politely after each one, sending flat claps ringing throughout the once-holy room, place of marriages, funerals, and sermons in ancient Hebrew, now home to my skinny ex-roomie, gyrating with a microphone in front of the band singing, “Whipping … Whipping, the wind is whipping me…”
That was the last time I saw Madonna.

- SCENE: 1981 — MOTHER
In fact, the truth of my mother is not so simple. My mother is my own, personal Faulkner novel, one that I, as an Only Child, get to carry around, pressed against my chest, all by myself. She is a good book, my mother, in that you never know what’s coming. And you can’t put it down.

- SCENE: 1987 — MADONNA RECALLED IN TRANQUILITY
My daughter stirs and looks at me. Huge blue eyes, white-blond hair, one cheek marked by the folds of the sheet. She says this to me:
"Blabla. Juk."
In the kitchen, she plays with some cardboard blocks while I cut up a banana and pour some juice. I feed the young one and sit myself down for some serious thinking.
OK, these are the facts: This woman came into my life; I lived with her for nine months. She fascinated me, irritated me, moved me, taught me, took from me. I don't think she ever bored me. Maybe once. Someone in the friendship plant programmed a planned obsolescence into the whole affair and when things broke down, I never bothered to repair them.  But before that, she lived with me and made me love her a little.
I have always loved easily so this is no grand pronouncement.  And I think she loved me. I think she did. She said she did in that letter, and so, so  many other times. I believed her. Why would I not? But I truly don't miss her at all.  It was something of a relief to have her gone, to have her replaced with safer friends, ones without that calculated look of innocence and planning. Maybe in the back of my mind, a tiny, confused part of me wanted her to get beaten back. Maybe I wanted her to be like me, like the rest of us. You know what it is? I wanted her to be nice, someday. Nice and real and kind. And now, she's chomping up the world — thousands of fascinated people sign on each day — and her way is working for her.
Hmm. Fair enough.
That acknowledged, I can get on with my day. My baby walks sagely to my chair and stands in front of me. She bends down, puts her head on my knees and sings me a song.

- SCENE: 1989 — DIVORCE
In 1989, after taking a year off from music to explore the theater, Madonna puts out “Like a Prayer.” I learn this many years later from some book.
In 1989, after taking nine years to explore futility, I leave my husband.
It’s really a no-brainer. We have both gotten to the point where our sanity has become endangered. And if one or both of us ends up in Mercywood, well, that wouldn’t be good for the kids. There is another child now, a little boy with big brown eyes.
One night, after a particularly acidic fight, something changes in me and I know, suddenly, amid the crashing of furniture and the fists slamming against walls, that it is time. …
About two days later, when Rex is out and the children are napping, I get the paper and gingerly open to the classifieds. Apartments for rent. Tears splat onto the newsprint as I circle a couple of two-bedroom possibilities. I need something to write on. Where’s a notepad? Anything.... The closet’s open and inside is an old box of junk I’ve been meaning to go through. School stuff. I grab a bunch of folded papers and copy landlord phone numbers onto a corner. Then, curious, I unfold the packet. It is Madonna’s long-ago letter to me. The Christmas letter. I read a few pages. I study the words, looking for some wisdom, some message, but there is nothing there for me. Just her interesting penmanship and a bit of lively writing, old memories of someone else’s winter. Hi Madonna, I say. I fold it back up and go look for another piece of paper. It occurs to me that maybe I should save it.
It doesn’t matter that I know this is the right thing to do. It doesn’t matter that when I leave my beloved home and shut the door behind me, I never look back. It doesn’t matter that I have the support of my family, friends and therapist. Divorce is way worse than labor. It’s like a long, slow flaying. One where you have to smile and make pretty for the children.

So begins Whit Hill's compelling, revealing, funny memoir of her life, as reflected through the lens of her junior year at the University of Michigan — with her roommate Madonna.
And it is also Whit's story of the years that followed, a life of dance, music, love, loss, and change.
This is a book about two very different women who lived alongside each other for nine months. About women artists in America, about mothers and daughters, about giving birth — to hot, squirming babies, and to huge, ionospheric pop careers. It is about loss and poverty and hope and happiness. And remembrance.

To be published SEPTEMBER 2011

- ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Whit Hill was born and raised in New York City, where she trained as an actor and dancer, and graduated from The University of Michigan with a B.F.A. For fourteen years she was artistic director of a Michigan-based dance company. A writer and songwriter, she now lives and works in Nashville, Tennessee, with her husband, musician Al Hill. She is the mother of two grown children. She is somewhat obsessed with dogs and watches too much television. (Author photo by Robin Dodd)

- Patricia Bosworth, Contributing Editor, Vanity Fair:
"A gracefully written memoir filled with fascinating portraits of college days and coming of age and love of family — and what it means to be a woman in this celebrity culture. The narrative is rich, generous, and very smart. It's refreshing to spend time with this wonderful book."

Madonna veut sortir le livre "Sex" en 3D pour le 20ème anniversaire.

Madonna plans to celebrate 20th anniversary of ‘Sex’ book
April 16th, 2011 2:42 pm CT
Peter Buchanan
Chicago Pop Music Examiner

On October 21, 1992, Chicago book stores such as Barnes & Nobles and Krock & Brantano’s had lines all around the block for people getting ready to buy Madonna’s ‘Sex’ book, the project that buried Madonna’s career for four years after many claimed she went too far. Virgin Records in Humboldt Park sold over 800 copies in three hours.
Madonna never apologized for the controversy, despite the cruel criticism. According to British tabloids and some local newspapers, Madonna is now going to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sex’s debut by releasing the book in 3D stereoscopic format. “Although the original pictures weren’t shot in 3D, there were enough shots taken of each scene where 3D pictures can be recreated,” says a source close to the project.
Some say that this is not a good idea. Jon Kraemer, a popular Chicago radio personality in the 1990s, remembers how the book hurt Madonna’s career. “Before October of 1992, Madonna was the hottest person on the earth. After October of 1992, she became a huge joke. She rebounded later in the decade, but never hit her pre-Sex stride again. “

A l'intérieur du nouveau livre de Neil Strauss: Une discussion avec Madonna.

By Virginia VanZanten
March 15, 2011

He has been held hostage by Courtney Love, made Lady Gaga cry, gone to church with Tom Cruise, hot tubbing with Marilyn Manson, bought diapers with Snoop Dogg, and he’s a world-renowned PUA to boot (Pickup Artist for the uninitiated). Neil Strauss, rock journalist extraordinaire and author of titles like The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band (Motley Crue), How to Make Love Like A Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale (with Jenna Jameson) and The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists, is releasing his newest title on March 15: Everyone Loves You When You’re Dead: Journeys Into Fame and Madness. Strauss extracts the most wild, revealing, unbelievable, and previously unpublished moments from the “three-thousand-something” articles he has written over the past two decades. “You can tell a lot about a person or a situation in a minute,” he writes. “But only if you choose the right minute. Here are 277 of them.”

Here’s an exclusive peek at just one of those moments. Strauss is interviewing Madonna in late 2005 when the conversation quickly turns to Morphine, Vicodin, and God:

We know her as Madonna. But her staff refers to her simply as M. And M was sitting in a private plane, which had just taken off from a Royal Air Force base south of London. She was en route to Frankfurt, Germany, where a helicopter was waiting to fly her to a television performance in Mannheim. For sustenance, M, her manager Angela, and her stylist Shavawn were all carrying bags of popcorn.

When’s the last time you were in a helicopter?
Madonna: I went in a cheap helicopter the day after I fell off my horse. I was on morphine, so I couldn’t tell what kind of danger I was in. But because it was my birthday, I was like, “I’m going to Paris. I don’t care if I’m injured.” It wasn’t until the morphine wore off the next day—I only did it for twenty-four hours, don’t get excited—that I realized how scary the helicopter was.

How was the morphine?
Madonna: It was pretty good. I’m a lot of fun on morphine. At least, I think I am. But I’m not fun on Vicodin.
Angela: Okay, do you know the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? I’ve never seen a transformation like that in my entire life.
Madonna: I only tried Vicodin once. I was in a lot of pain, and nothing killed the pain. Not even morphine, to tell you the truth. And everyone kept telling me to try Vicodin, but they kept saying, “Be careful. It’s so amazing. But if you take it for more than ten days, you’re going to get addicted to it.” So I called five people to get advice before I took it, and they all told me I was going to love it. Whatever. So I took it.
Shavawn: She went on a walk with me, and it was really scary.
Madonna: Drugs have a weird effect on me. They do the opposite with me. I just chewed the entire inside of my mouth. I bitched at everybody. And I was in more pain. It was terrible: the worst experience of my life.

At least you didn’t get addicted.
Madonna: I’m happy to say that none of my pharmaceuticals—and I’ve had a plethora of them given to me—have influenced me.

I don’t like pills anyway. It’s a control thing.
Madonna: I just like the idea of pills. I like to collect them but not actually take them—just in case. Then I fell off my horse, I got tons of stuff: Demerol and Vicodin and Xanax and Valium and OxyContin, which is supposed to be like heroin. And I’m really quite scared to take them. I’m a control freak too. And any time I’ve taken anything in my life, as soon as I take it, I’m like, “Okay, I want it out of my body.” I just start guzzling water. I want to flush it out, fast.

Do you ever think about—
Madonna: Do I think about dying? Is that what you were thinking about asking?

No, but that’s a better question than what I was going to ask.
Madonna: Real death is disconnecting, but the death where your physical body is no longer functioning, that’s not real death.

What is it then?
Madonna: Death is when you disconnect from God—or when you disconnect from the universe, because God is the universe. I think anyone who’s disconnected is living in a serious hell. They can medicate themselves or live in serious denial to convince themselves they’re not in hell, but sooner or later it’s going to catch up to you.

Nouveau livre sur la carrière d'Anna Sui qui a décollé en 1990 grâce à Madonna.

New book highlights Sui's career of cool catwalks
JANUARY 6, 2011, 4:20 P.M. ET.
Associated Press

NEW YORK — Each runway show is a chapter in Anna Sui's life. It's a commentary on her interests, passions and mindset of the moment.
Now each runway show is also a chapter in a new book, which, she says, is an autobiography in pictures.
Seeing it all together, Sui notices some commonalities — especially the influence of rock 'n' roll — and some aberrations — like the joint surfer-hip hop moment — but it all makes her feel both humbled and proud.
"All I ever wanted to do was design clothes for rock stars and people who go to rock concerts. That I've been able to do that for so long is pretty amazing," says Sui.
It's also pretty amazing that Sui can define the single moment her career took off in 1990: Madonna, on her way to a Jean Paul Gaultier fashion show in Paris, wore one of Sui's dresses.
She could have chosen any one of the hundreds of designer frocks littering her hotel room, but the pop star-fashion diva picked hers. "It was the first in a chain of events that gave me the confidence to stage my own fashion show," Sui writes in the forward of the book, published by Chronicle.
And she's been staging fun, lively shows ever since with Naomi Campbell wearing a feathered headdress, Carla Bruni in knee-highs, Linda Evangelista in a polar-bear cap and Helena Christensen in a tinsel-like scarf. More recently, Agness Deyn rocked a guitar and Isabeli Fontana piled on turquoise bangles.
Any show, any year, you'll see models smiling in the photographs, a rare catwalk combination.
Sui has carved out a niche in romantic, bohemian dresses that double for daytime and cocktails, as long as the wearer is young and hip. But she also broadened her appeal with a Target collaboration, fragrances and cosmetics.
"What people look to me for is a whole look," she says. "People come to me for icing on the cake, not a basic stretch pant."
Sui was there with Madonna when she wore a sheer black babydoll at the Gaultier show, linked by mutual friend and top photographer Steven Meisel. "She came out with a coat on, and I couldn't wait to see what she was wearing. I thought it would be some outrageous outfit, and then she said, 'Anna, I have a surprise for you.'"
Madonna also wore Sui when she was photographed by Meisel in 1992 for Vogue.
Meisel, along with other high-wattage friends, including Campbell, Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Sofia Coppola, and Jack White and his wife Karen Elson, certainly help keep Sui part of the cool crowd, which seems a bit at odds with the shy, cherub-faced woman who opens up her Garment Center office with her own keys for an early morning interview and spends her downtime in a Detroit suburb with her parents.
She also doesn't wear her glasses when she takes her bow at the end of the fashion show so the faces in the crowd will be blurred because it's too nerve-racking. "I think to myself, 'Oh my god, how can I follow these most beautiful girls in the world out there?'"
Her collections wouldn't be what they are if Sui didn't have this yin-yang personality, a full life and such loyalty to herself and her group of diverse friends, says Andrew Bolton, curator at The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He counts himself in Sui's inner circle, and it's mostly his words in "Anna Sui."
"In her world, personal and professional always overlap," Bolton says.
They met in the mid-90s at the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards when they were both seated at Vivienne Tam's table. "We became quick friends. We'd take weekend trips and talk a lot about music. We're both such huge music fans and fans of street style," Bolton says. "Our friendship didn't develop over high culture."
Yet, Sui can't fully hide her intellectual side. "She's so well read, and she's so eager to learn," Bolton says.
When you look at her designs, you'll see references to fine artists, American explorers, Victoriana and classic fashion designers, both in European couture and American sportswear. Bolton picks out Arnold Scaasi, Halston, Geoffrey Beene, Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel as particular influences.
But then there's the bits of "Beach Blanket" movies, "Hansel & Gretel" and punk star Siouxsie Sioux, too.
Her current concert calendar includes Gorillaz and Phoenix, so maybe there'll be hits of hip-hop and electronica in the new fall collection that will debut next month at New York Fashion Week.
Work starts on the next batch of clothes even before the previous ones have digested with retailers and the press, Sui explains. Believe it or not, her collections often start with the shoe that will be worn on the runway because getting shoes made takes longer than garment samples.
Maybe that's because for clothes, it's one-stop shopping at her Garment District studio, which houses a frilly, luxe showroom, Sui's office full of fabrics and photos, and a small, old-school-yet-buzzing manufacturing space, filled with sewing machines, patterns, and racks and racks of clothes.
She's a passionate supporter of the midtown neighborhood that was the heart of fashion when she first came to Parsons the New School of Design in the '70s, when she first met Meisel. She has seen local resources dwindle and full globalization of an industry that she worries can seem impersonal. Impersonal just isn't her way.
"I have to see everything I make, touch it, feel it. I love the draping of the fabric, the muslin, to see how a sleeve flutters," she says.
"This is my life, this is all an extension of my life."

Meet the man behind Madonna's amazing biceps.
Pat Manocchia has gained behind the scenes fame for kicking celebrities' butts into shape and then some.
He went on the Howard Stern show this morning to talk about his new book, "Anatomy of Strength Training."
Stern told listeners that he considered Manocchia one of his best friends and the "manliest man he knows."
He's also Stern's personal trainer.
The fitness guru gave some advice for those who want to get in shape for the new year.
"Your body only does five things.  Five  --   that's it." he said. "You bend a joint. You extend a joint. You pull it away from your body. You pull it in. You rotate it."
It also didn't hurt that Manocchia mentions his "personal relationships" with some pretty A-list celebs.
He and Julia Roberts were caught on camera at the premiere of the film "Michael Collins" back in 1996.

Productbeschrijving

Maripol: Little Red Riding Hood
Friday, August 27, 2010

Madonna's Original Style Mastermind Offers a Glimpse of New York's 80s Fairytale

From the moment Madonna appeared on the cover of Like a Virgin, clad in a white lace wedding dress, her body bedecked with rubber bangles and crucifix earrings, the youth of America (make that the world) went nuts for her ragged, good-girl-gone-bad style—a teen craze that reached fever pitch when Madge flashed her garters on stage at the first MTV Music Video Awards in 1984. The woman behind Madonna’s Like a Virgin look was Maripol, a French-born photographer, stylist, art director and designer who moved to New York at the age of 19 in 1976, subsequently landing a job as the art director of the Fiorucci store on 59th Street. Like Madonna, Maripol was a luminary of New York’s underground scene, with friends including Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Debbie Harry, among other Mudd Club regulars. Maripol was also the producer of urban fairytale Downtown ’81 (written by Glenn O'Brien and directed by Edo Bertoglio) and, after launching Madonna in a flurry of lace and sex (and founding her own company, Maripolitan Popular Objects Ltd, to disseminate her innovative rubber jewelry and Madonna tour merchandise), she went on to work on videos for Cher, Elton John and D’Angelo. Fresh from her latest project, a capsule collection of tees and rubber accessories for Marc by Marc Jacobs (released this spring to coincide with the resurgence of all things 80s in the fashion world), she releases Maripol: Little Red Riding Hood. The book, published this month by Damiani, collects her photographs, sketchbooks and inspirational material for the first time. To celebrate, we gave Maripol a call—for her thoughts on Lady Gaga and Britney.

Maripol: Little Red Riding Hood
Conversation with Marc Jacobs. Text by Maripol.
Published by Damiani

When Madonna's Like a Virgin came out in 1984, it wasn't just the songs that made a splash, it was her look. That crucifix jewelry! Those earrings! Those black rubber bracelets! The accessories that gave Madonna her stylistic edge and sparked millions of prepubescent copycats across the globe were the brainchild of Maripol, a designer and stylist who was working at the time as the art director of the Fiorucci store. "I was attracted by objects and I liked to use them by taking away their original meaning," Maripol has said. "I would see something I liked and I'd say, 'That would be great as an earring.'" An habitué of the same New York dance clubs as the singer, Maripol styled Madonna at the outset of the Material Girl's career, both casually and also officially, on the Like a Virgin album cover, ensuring the singer an eternal spot in the pantheon of pop style icons. "I was already making the rubber jewelry and I was already making the crosses because of my love for the punks," she said. "So it was perfect for her." Now Maripol, who has just launched a new line of colorful, affordable accessories for Marc Jacobs, opens up her scrapbooks of drawings, designs, photography and writing to create a book that captures her personality as an artist, beginning with her childhood and her arrival in New York as a 19-year-old art school student.
Maripol moved to New York from France in 1976, where she became a part of the New York clubbing and music scene, styling Madonna and working on films such as Downtown 81 (starring Jean-Michel Basquiat and Deborah Harry). In the mid-1980s, she opened her own boutique, Maripolitan, in the NoHo area of New York. Maripol has also been art director on music videos for Cher, D'Angelo and Elton John, among others.

"We grew up in a world where it was ok to exchange ideas with other people, and it wasn’t so rigid, and it's like what you said about the new wave and punk movement, it was much more raw and tougher and it was about a bunch of people who had something to say. It wasn't so boxed in and so pre-fabricated. It was something very organic and cool and very hard, you know, which is great."
Marc Jacobs in conversation with Maripol, excerpted from Little Red Riding Hood.

Le livre "Sex" de Madonna: le livre épuisé le plus recherché.

BookFinder.com Report Fall 2010
Out-of-print and in demand

Every year BookFinder.com tracks the most sought-after out-of-print titles in America. In this, the eighth edition, several books garnered enough attention for publishers to re-print them in the near future. We also find some out-of-print mainstays which are unlikely to see a printer again despite their popularity. But above all we collected the top 100 most sought after out-of print titles in America over the past 12 months, and here they are.

Born Collectibles:
If bookies took bets on out-of-print books our money would be on these titles staying off the presses for good.

Sex by Madonna
This explicit collection features photos of the Material Girl, without the material, has been a collector's item since it first hit shelves in 1992. Since Madonna is never one to do something twice, and the fact that the once highly controversial book is less edgy than it once was leads us to guess that Sex will remain out-of-print.

Top 100 most sought after out-of-print books in 2010:
1 Madonna Sex
2 Ray Garton In a Dark Place: The Story of a True Haunting
3 Harry Douglas Smith The Secret of Instantaneous Healing
4 Don Graf Basic Building Data: 10,000 Timeless Construction Facts
5 Nora Roberts Promise Me Tomorrow
6 Dennis Potter Ticket to Ride
7 Luigi Serafini Codex Seraphinianus
8 Allan D. Richter Eve of the End
9 Stephen King (as Richard Bachman) Rage
10 Rasiel Suarez ERIC : The Encyclopedia of Roman Imperial Coins
